follow the path on your map, look carefully for a place to enter from the water when the path on your map says you should enter the water.
if you still can't find it
there is an opening almost at the water surface in the wall of the tower, crouch to enter and go up the stairs- you're in the compound
One thing you need to remember is to state what difficulty level you're playing on. Things differ quite a bit in this one. The advice you got is good, but the route to get to the spot mentioned differs, especially on Garrett, where it's a lot harder to find your way. :)

I'm playing on GARRETT.
I found dr Provost invitation and went inside the Museum. I have Vault Key and the tool for ultra-violet detection. But every time I try to open the Vault door, the archer tries to kill me... What can I do? I do not have any weapons and I can not kill anybody... The archer does not notice me until I try to steal his arrows or open the door... I can't go into the vault because he is shooting arrows at me... HELP!
:(
Nightwalker on 1/8/2002 at 00:45
You should be able to sneak over, take his arrow, open the vault and get in without disturbing the archer at all. I've done it a number of times. Maybe you're making a little bit too much noise? Also, once the archer has been alerted, it's possible that he doesn't return to exactly the same position. If that's what's happened, you could try starting from a slightly earlier save. I'm afraid that's the only suggestions I can come up with.

Just sit there for a few minutes behind her back and wait until she calms down again, Bukary. It's exactly like in the first chapter with the pickpockets - when they have seen you, you can't pickpocket from them for a few minutes. :)

************** MINOR SPOILERS ****************
Please help a frustrated taffer!
I've just found my way inside the Cathedral window but I haven't found the Cardinal yet. Normally I would just keep playing and searching, but my system (P450,128MB RAM, 32MB video) is having kittens. My frame-rates are crap and cause me to run too fast and stumble into the AI or walk off a ledge. Each time I get caught by the priests (or the game crashes to desktop for no reason) it takes me about two minutes to reload my game, but I really want to know what happens next..have mercy!! To top things off I also lose sound after a few re-loads and have to restart Windows to get it back - it's not much fun playing Thief when you can't hear any footsteps!
Great mission of course, but a little too "hungry" for my elderly PC!
Thanks,
Paulcoz.

paulcoz:
The Cardinal´s bedroom is in the NE corner on the ground floor. Enter the curtained passage on the E side (the one closest to the altar) and then in through the door to the left. The Cardinal is not there but he knows you are, and starts a little speech. It is a good idea to douse the gas lamp before you deliver the Cylix. After that objective is checked, you should need fewer reloads, since the game does not end when you have been spotted. Often you can escape into the canals when things get rough.
Good luck!

The RAM is the problem then, I have as few of it as you and the symptoms were exactly the same. 2 minute loading times, and the frame rates.
The cardinal's room is in the 1st floor; directly east of the altar.
A tip for us computer-system challenged people: Don't try to explore the cathedral at all, just find your way into the room and give him the Cylix.
Find your way to the altar (it's pretty easy to go there, coming from the stairs at the balcony). Douze the torch that lights the west wall, shoot moss on the floor, wait until the creeps are relatively far away, and hurry in. Now, to help you avoid yet another mind-numbing, patience-testing, and definitely fun-killing 2-5 minute reload:
Before you dump the Cylix into the chute, explore the room. Frob EVERYTHING that you can frob, then enter the secret way out that you just opened, and dump the Cylix from here into the chute. Then crawl IMMEDIATELY back into a perfect shadow.
Another SPOILER, now an even more giving-away one... read this only after you have dumped the Cylix into the chute:
Here's also the best place to wait until everything calmed down again, that will be a waiting time of no more than 5 minutes game time, I think. You will notice that they stop running after a while.
After this, enjoy that you are now free again and without time limit... either explore the cathedral now (there's some loot to take), or start to explore the city. Don't be too hasty to get your stuff from your apartment though, as then it may become again reload-intense.

***************** SPOILERS ******************
Thanks for the directions, I made it to the cardinal's room. I also found a dark spot to hide in before that guard came rushing into the room. Phew!
Now, after making my way back to the apartment, I'm supposed to go to Meepwood Cemetary. Do I need a key to extend the draw-bridge? If so, where is it? This place is way too big to search for one key!
Thanks again,
Paulcoz.
The swordguard in the little hut next to the bridge & next to the city's clocktower has the key to his belt.
He is most probably dead now, but I am sure that his body is nearby. Search the wooden catwalk, and maybe the nearby river for in the case that his body fell into the water.
