That doesn't sound right. When you put the cylix down the shoot an alarm goes off and you become a hunted criminal. The undead only appear when you get back to your room and collect your gear.
However I do agree that the level is very hard and at times frustrating. You never really get an opportunity to relax and enjoy the city but it was deliberately designed that way. There are quite a few weapons included in the level to help (I managed to destroy most of the undead), look at the walkthrough.
I must confess the second time I played it through (on expert) I played it with the walkthrough on my knee (a thing I would never normally do) but that is a reflection of the difficulty of the level.
It is a cleverly designed designed pack.

I know what your problem is, Porche.

There's the walkthrough, but don't spoil it for yourself by reading the whole thing, really - the mission is just too awesome :)
First, try my suggestions - I haven't completed Act 2 yet but I know enough to help you out there. In fact you shouldn't have to touch the walkthrough. But its there, because, well, its really good to cross-reference your info, if you're wondering why something is the way it is - this mission has a lot of good story behind it :)
Yeah, like me, you did it in the "wrong" order, and are going to have to start again if you want to get out of the eternal hell you've created for yourself.
Okay, the undead was not triggered by you giving the Cylix down the chute. Technically, it is - Alcandor uses it to raise the dead and all that - but that event DOESN"T actually happen untill you go back to your house and get all your stuff back! That's what triggers the event.
It's wierd I know - while being chased out of the church by priests and guards alike, I was thinking "....you... bloody... ....you know what I"m gonna do? I'm gonna go back to my place, get my stuff, come back, and black jack every single one of you bastards!! And THEN, I'm going to cover the entire city, and black jack every guard just for being a guard!!! YOU'LL RUE THE DAY!!!!"
But it doesn't work like that. Unfortunately. It's very strange, and I don't agree with it, but oh well. The mission is too cool to complain.
By the way, if you look through an appropriate peep hole, did you know you can actually see Alcandor waiting at the bottom of the chute, to receive the Cylix? :) If you really can't find it, its in the walkthrough.
After you get chased out, do everything else. Spend as much time in the city as you can, doing everything you can. Yes, you'll have to do it all without your 'stuff', including your blackjack.
I'm not sure exactly what does what yet, but some of the stuff you are supposed to steal, will aid you later, against the undead. The walkthrough talks about eyes with different properties, that I won't spoil yet.
And I think the vampire blade kills undead. Not sure yet. Haven't got it either :)
All I can say is, that if you do enough reading, you will find out how to get everything and work everything out. Getting the vampire blade involves performing a special ritual, spell thing, in the wizards place. To do it, you need a spell book, and some special eyes or gems, can't remember exactly, but again, the details are in appropriate readables around the city.
Most of the written stuff you need to know is in the cathedral, I beleive.
Then, once you do go back and get your stuff, and all hell breaks loose (I found that if I stuck with the girl, she killed a few guys for me, thank god, but then she goes away and vanishes from the level)
- you are not on a timer to destroy the Cylix. Well after I get to that point again, I'll get back to you. Only have just restarted a few nights ago and am working my way through again :)
By the way, if you read enough, you find out that a lot of those undead people are actually vampires. The lesser vampires decay into a zombie like form, but the higher vampiers, when they are about to die, turn into a mist form - it's all in the books somewhere. It's really cool to read about the Lore of the city, and then actually see examples of what you were reading about :)
Yeah I definately appreciate all of the details, the way when some tiny little thing happens, you can read about it somewhere.
Now that I read your reply, I think that everything probably did happen in order, because I do have my blackjack.... I probably just didn't remember right, since I have been playing this mission for a long time.
Nevertheless, it still makes it a bit frustrating - can't get the
vampire blade without pretty much completeing the mission, save for the museum, so trying to kill all the undead is a bit futile right now..
Either way though, I'm stilll having fun with it. I just bought a new computer, so it should run a bit better now as well, soon as I transfer my old saved games to it.

Cool, though I'm not sure if I was clear enough about
avoiding getting your blackjack till you've roamed around and stolen things from the museum and got the vampire blade, etc.
If you go off and get your blackjack, all the undead come out, and you don't get a chance to see the museum, etc. in their original state. The undead come and ruin everything. There is a cool way to sneak in to the museum, that involves fooling the guards into thinking you're someone else. None of this kind of things will happen if you go and get your blackjack straight away.
Which is why I decided to restart again, so I could enjoy the city the way it should be, before all the undead wreck everything for everyone.
Was your new computer for Thief 3? :)

Ooooh, okay, I see now... well in that case maybe I'll just restart the level.
And as for my new computer, well it might've been for Thief 3 a few months ago, but since I played the Xbox version (and wasn't particularily impressed with it) it's not really - just for the opportunity, after 3 or 4 years, to finally be able to play some new games... Though Thief seems like a decent enough game on the computer, just that it needs old ATI drivers, so I'll probably wait for a driver fix before I buy it.

Guys, just FYI, you CAN get your blackjack without triggering the Night of the Living Dead, and you CAN then go around the city knocking everyone out.
All you have to do is inch into your hotel room JUST far enough to grab the blackjack, and then move straight backwards out the door. Just don't open the chest in your room or go too far in, or you'll trigger the undead arrival.
One more caution: on Expert level, do not knock anyone out and then pick up the bodies. When you trigger the undead, all the unconscious people become corpses, and if you picked up their bodies, you are counted as responsible for the deaths and the mission fails. It's the same idea as if you picked up a body and threw it into some lava. If you pick it up, you're responsible!
Domarius on 18/6/2004 at 05:55
Okay, that's interesting. Thanks Krush.
Regarding sneaking away with the blackjack without setting off
the night of the living dead
- isn't that like, breaking the story? Because, how would I know in advance that walking into that area of the room would trigger that incident?
I mean, if there's a pot that says "put the cylix in here and meet your doom!" or something, then I'm fairly warned, but if its an invisible trigger zone, then it's supposed to happen without my knowing.
Thanks for the tip about not picking up the bodies. Rather unfortunate that, because the fact that
all the corpses ACTUALLY turn into zombies
is really cool!
ANOTHER BUG
The strange green bug humanoid thing that makes terrible grunting noises, that's supposed to be the quasi-dimensional monster, right? - it's perfectly scary and otherwordly, just making sure I'm not mistaken cause there is that eye in the sky as well, that I thought was supposed to be the same thing.
You know the quasi-dimensional monster that is protecting the vampire blade at the wizards place? After I stole it, it appears intermittantly to haunt me, and when I first encountered it, I whacked it and whacked it and whacked it with the vampire blade, over and over till it fell dead dead dead, cause it was so scary, and I gloated over the dead body. Next thing I knew I was staring at the "MISSION FAILED" movie, and a "Dont kill anyone" failed objective. WHAT GIVES??? :( I had to just run like a sissy every time it appeared, for the rest of the game.
Nightwalker on 18/6/2004 at 12:54
The "eye in the sky" and the invisible monster are not the same creatures.
The fact that you die when trying to kill the invisible one is indeed a bug that was not planned but you just have to live with it. It sure makes the level more difficult!
Purah was in a bit of a rush when this mission was released and was off to other things besides Thief so bugs that were found afterwards have not been fixed. It's a terrific mission pack, despite the few small bugs that pop up every once in a while.
Ghostly Apparition on 13/7/2004 at 02:39
there is one thing that bothers me about this mission.
In the first part of mission 2 (which is only as far as I've gotten)
In trying to find the cardinal, (which took some time because i kept getting
lost then running out of time). I found the gem facet shop? I picked my way
in and stole a buncha gems. But when I restarted so as to make the 10 min obj
figuring I could go back to the gem shop later. Well, after finishing the cardinal
obj. I went back to the gem shop only to find the door wasn't openable.
That kinda made me mad. Why would you do that?
Oh one question. My map for the mission isn't bright enough for me to read.
How can i fix it? The game is bright enough, I reset my gamma to .4 in user
ini. but obj screen and map is really dark.

The Gleaming Faucet should only be closed up after you've
gone to your rooms to meet Mercedes and triggered the appearance of the undead. Before that, you can go in and get the goodies.
