I've avoided this thread since deciding to buy the game, so this may have been mentioned, and I'm not going to read it in detail now as I wish no spoilers, but the 'search this thread' option with some appropriate keywords didn't seem to mention it, so I'll post the info in case it helps someone else.
When you save the game, the files are written to My Documents\Bethesda\Call of Cthulhu\ and, "Autosave" aside, it creates folders for each saved game based on the current date and time. Unfortunately this feature is badly buggy.
If Windows is not using the 24 hour clock format for displaying the time, then DCotE will create a new folder using Windows' default (12-hour) naming scheme, and then make a bad assumption by trying to write the save game file into a folder with the 24-hour naming scheme. That folder doesn't exist, so every time you save the game, all you get is a new and empty folder.
The solution is to go to the Windows Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Customise -> Time -> Time format, and select the "HH:mm:ss" option and then click all the OK buttons.
The good news is that 24 hour clock is a much better way to display time, so you're really doing yourself a favour ;)

i prefer the (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478988/) silent movie. Very good.
i also liked the limited saves in this one. Usually i hate that, but in this game it added to the suspense for me. i think ditching that would have an adverse affect on the atmosphere and tension.

here's what ended up working for me:
i was running perfectly (not getting hit or stopping) up to the point where you're talking about and failing repeatedly. and the things i changed that made the difference were: staying to the left hand side (the outside) of the ledge, jumping up stairs and up steep inclines, keep strafing to a minimum and here's the big one - as soon as you get out of the end of the tunnel where the rock bridge is (where you keep dying) start jumping repeatedly. i made it twice out of about five times. lowering the resolution i'm quite sure was useless for me. hope it works if you're still at it. (Btw, once you get through, go to the left, not the right. right's a dead end, which is why i had to do it twice.)
i still can't finish the lvl, i can (barely) run/jump over that stone bridge and when jack starts praying with his disc he's dead
and trust me, im not doing anything wrong:i jump on stairs and hills, i don't use left & right trust me i'm a pro right now
the only thing i didn't do is lowering the res but why would that help :s:s?

A lower resolution can improve framerates (depends on current/target resolution and your computer) and potentially let you move a bit faster.

wow. dead even during the praying part. try it with the resolution down. maybe it did help me after all, cuz that's about as close as you can get. that's splitting-hairs close.

well the developers must be drunk when they made that part,
luckely they made a save point after you get the disc and defeated the monster in the bubble
after a fews tries i finnaly managed to get it right  (without lowering the resolution, you don't need a nasa computer to run that game, just look at its grafixs..)
about 25 tries in total, i crossed the bridge with the falling stones only 4 times and got killed by praying 3 times
i won't do that again soon :cheeky:
damn its been a while since i struggled so much with a game

Just finished the game for the 3rd or 4th time (on Mythos Specialist this time). LOVE it. It's so incredibly atmospheric, innovative, unusually hard, and stylish that it's actually in my top 5 games of all times. I can listen the credits music endlessly, it's so beautiful.
Why it's so that almost every time I love a game and it's continuation is developed, the developer goes bankrupt. Irritating and sad as hell.
Here is an old trailer of the second game in the series (vaporware now) - (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYD4wP1wjNo) CoC: Destiny's End. The third game was supposed to be called CoC: Beyond the Mountains of Madness.

I still never managed to get off of the boat thanks to that damn bug where you can't see the targets on the shore :(
