I've just completed my computer upgrade, so I'm now getting back to all the games that I stockpiled before I went E8400/GTX 260. (There's way too many of them - I sometimes wish I had the self-discipline not to buy games when they come out, because more often than not they then lie around for a year or more...)
One of the games I've returned to is Call of Duty 4. I'm enjoying the utterly on-rails but amazingly well executed singleplayer game, but I'm curious about multiplayer: is it worth playing? Is it the kind of MP that you have to invest a certain amount of time in before it pays off, or is it the type where you can just jump in for half an hour and have a blast? (So that you have some idea where I'm coming from: I'm not much of an MP person, but I've had fun with Battlefield 2 and Team Fortress 2 in the past.)

I've been getting quite into it over the last week. I would say its like a cross between counterstrike and halo - similar sneaky-sneaky-oh no! instant death CS playstyle, but then in most gametypes you respawn pretty soon and know exactly where to go to stick a knife in that camping bastards face, and with suitable perks jumping, melee-ing and grenade-spamming your way across the map with an uzi is a viable option. The fact you earn new shiny weapons etc makes it pretty addictive, even if the AK seems to beat pretty much everything.
Definitely worth a go, not as good as TF2 (but then, what is?).

Perhaps I can take this opportunity also to ask: is it worth playing TF2 with a headset, or do most people not use it? I did play some BF2 games with a headset, but unfortunately so few of the players on the servers I frequented had one themselves. It would've made things so much more co-ordinated...

Depends what platfor you're on. I tried using a headset in XBox but gave up, nobody ever listens to even helpfull advice.
As for your CoD question, I'd say try it. It's one hell of a game, and unlockable weapons, camos and attachments just keep you hooked. Find some friends to play with though. Makes it much more fun.

having a mic is a good idea for TF2, though a headset isn't necessary (for PC). If you are on a computer with a built in mic (like my HP laptop), that is more than sufficient.

As a general rule, I play TF2 (and all MP games) with my mic (and everyone else's) soundly turned off. I'd rather not listen to Coheed and Cambria or some 14-year-old punching his dog, thank you.

I don't think I ever got any of the faglolz!!!!1!1 adolescents when I played Battlefield 2, at least not over the headset, but may be down to me having been late to the game, so the pimpleheads had already moved on to some other game.
I love the gameplay/co-op potential of headsets, but I definitely wouldn't want to play with/against kids that make me want to play Ultima and kill me some kiddies.

In regards to COD4, you simply must play it. The players can be a bit juvenile at times, but the immersion and upgrades run the experience so deep you'll have a hard time pulling yourself away. The weapon upgrades, perks, and challenges are so well balanced it's just awesome. And, what's truly fascinating, is that players with no upgrades or big perks can still kill the players who do. It's tougher but it never feels unfair which is strange. You gotta try it. :thumb:

One suggestion if you decide to go through with it; learn the different sounds the guns make. It makes offing potentially annoying targets (those with a silenced P90 for me) much easier.
Also goes great with some heavy metal or somesuch blaring in the background! :thumb:
