Sounds like you're looking for something with survival horror aspects. System Shock 2, Call of Cthulhu, something like that?

Survival horror. is that what the genre's called? That sounds like it, yeah. I've played and loved system shock 2 (I gushed about it in another thread on this same website) for similar reasons as what I tried to outline in the OP.
I guess the ideal would be a combination of that with action rpg like hellgate london. A single player survival action horror rpg genre...mmm

Try the original System Shock if you haven't already, and can bear playing an old DOS game.
As I mentioned in my previous post, you might also like Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
You might also like Dead Space, I suppose, though I found it more funny than scary.

I just looked it up. (clive barker's right?). Looks very promising actually.

Depends on how actiony you want it. Undying's got faster, Doom-esque combat. Dead Space is also good, but the combat's a bit slower. When you get to true survival horror stuff like Silent Hill, then the combat's practically nonexistent.

Um, Stalker. (I'm not sure the first time was loud enough). Improved by the mods that force you to sleep occasionally.

I loved in SS2 when you can hack a turret for that reason. In an otherwise incessantly hostile world it's great to feel some comfort knowing you can rely on the turret, for a little while anyways.

The full 3D Bionic Commando gave me a great Super Hero feel, much more so than any Super Hero licensed game I've played. I think it was a combination of the action and the spectacular music. When you're taking out giant robots with a bionic arm, and that bombastic soundtrack is pumping away in the background, well, it's pretty awesome :)

Absolutely Stalker if you want to be sucked into a gameworld. Also try the Carnivores and Silent Hunter games. 3 Totally different games that gave me 'that' feeling.
