Warning Spoilers ahead!
I was reading this complete-loot guide to this mission in thief gold because I noticed I only had 1500 out of the total 3100 or such gold in the level after beating it. I was like NO WAY, i discovered every nook and cranny. anyway, it says this in particular about the start of the level:
"Getting Started
I thought half my screen would be black, and I am grateful that it isn’t so. You have half your life, and a nearly empty inventory. You find yourself in a familiar room — the Shrine in Constantine’s garden (Garden West), the room with the altar. The doubledoors that you picked last time are now locked, but the door that you could not pick last time is now opened.
All you have is your faithful compass. And surprisingly Constantine’s Sword is still with you. Why? You had better ask the Constantine himself, for I have no idea. Perhaps it is because he kept his words, since he gave it to you as a gift in the first place; or perhaps because it is invisible in shadow and was missed. So find your Blackjack, two Rope Arrows and three Noisemaker Arrows behind the altar.
At Normal Difficulty, more ammunition is lying around the room. Get the Flash Bomb on the left side of the sarcophagus. Then walk behind the sarcophagus to get back your Purse (2126;0;0). Yes! it has a value of 2126! The biggest treasure you ever get. You have just recoverd the money taken away from you at the start of this mission (if you got less in the previous mission, you found less here). Then go to the far right (South West) corner of this hall to get the Gas Arrow — a crystal floating in mid air surrounded by gases.
Leave via the only doorway and start descending the stairs"
Ok, when I start this level, and i restarted it just to make sure there was no error, I see an altar at the front of the room but no sarcophagus as he is talking about. Behind the alter is where my blackjack and some arrows lie, but there is no sarcophagus in the room and no purse to be sure. I walked out the door in the side of the room and there is some kind of thing which could be a sarcophagus on the right, but it is tight against the wall and there is no "behind" it. no purse on top of it, or as far as i can see to the small crevices to the sides of it, nothing. Could he have been playing thief 1, and in thief gold they removed it? This is very odd for sure.

Your purse should be in the room, along with some other tools of the trade.
As for SPOILER ALERT, why not use the SPOILER TAG The BIG BLUE S at the top,to cover your "spoilers".
No need for extra spaces or ALERTS.
Just hit the tag and type in between the codes you just say what you have to say and when you are done space past the [/ and continue.
Perhaps he misnamed the Altar as a sarchophacus. The purse and other items are difficult to see sometimes. So crouch and cover the area around the altar very carefully.

The purse location depends on a difficulty.
Normal - Behind the altar in the starting room.
Hard - Near the bonfires where fire elementals patrol.
Expert - On the first floor in the room leading upstairs.

Im playing expert mode so the room leading upstairs in the mansion with the circular cut-out ceiling? i shall search now...
Ok found it, wow right in front of my eyes in the middle of the floor. I think i missed it because it was placed on top of a matching blue tile.
