Agreed, that looks like a hundred years' worth of cobwebs, or more.

Took me a while to find out if anyone replied to my post earlier... 'twas a busy weekend.

You're about my bestest friend forever right now. Though I can't delve deeper into the database your link eventually led me to (which I'm willing to bet has tons more shots buried within), it still provided me with at least 14 excellent, high res samples right from the first image search. Appreciate the help, man. :D
You're welcome. I'm still trying to figure out where our occidental digitalizations went... anyway, a couple of links:
Dresden: (
http://www.slub-dresden.de/en/collections/manuscripts/sachsenspiegel/) copy of the Sachsenspiegel with a more modern spine
Leipzig: (
http://www.refaiya.uni-leipzig.de/indexpage?searchclass=islamhs&XSL.lastPage.SESSION=%2Findexpage%3Fsearchclass%3Dislamhs&lang=en) Refaiya collection of Damascus and (
http://www.islamic-manuscripts.net/indexpage?searchclass=islamhs&XSL.lastPage.SESSION=%2Findexpage%3Fsearchclass%3Dislamhs) the rest of already-digitized Oriental manuscripts (in both cases you should be able to browse through the folders and to the individual manuscript entries; those with a "cover"-labeled image box at the top should feature book spines, however not all manuscripts still have their cover unfortunately and sometimes its entirely modern)
Apparently we in Leipzig are one of few who digitize bookspines at all. You can get tons of book covers (although they're sometimes younger than the actual pages, re-bound etc.) everywhere but hardly book spines.
And while browsing I found a nice little photo database: (
http://bild.isgv.de/) Not useful for textures, but a bit of inspiration maybe.

Ren, that's a better overall density of webs, but I think you should have some of them curved and draping, rather than all being taught and straight-lined.

I think you should have
all of them curved and draping, rather than all being taught and straight-lined. Cobweb strands always describe parabolic paths between the attachment points unless they are exactly vertical. It can be a shallow section of a parabola, but always noticeably parabolic.

This. They still look too straight.

Most should be curved and draped, whilst accented with a variety of straight threads in appropriate places.

Hey everyone. Sorry I don't have an update just yet. I actually decided to go to bed at a decent hour last night. Well, I wouldn't say decide exactly, more like the need for sleep suddenly hit me, and I didn't have any other choice. Burning the candle at both ends finally caught up with me, I guess.
Okay, straight web strands? I'll see what I can do. I'm still sorta new to this whole cobweb thing, and I'm learning as I go here. I haven't been able to make good looking curved strands yet, but going for densely packed straight lines gave me decent results. Hence why I did what I did.
And ZB, the webs being too thick? I halfway agree. I might've piled them on a little too thick. But look at the original up close. It's more than just a subtle effect. There are webs covering practically every surface of the texture. It's fairly dense. I might've gone a little overboard, but not by much as you think.
One thing's for sure though, I'll have everything done tonight except the cobwebs. Sticker removal, color tweaks, everything except the webs, which I'll probably be working on for a little bit longer. Spending a week on a single texture is ridiculous. I'm ready to get this one done and move on to another one.

That texture represents 8% of the Keeper family (since there are two different-sized versions of that same texture in the family.)

Destickering almost complete. I'd finish it up tonight, but I gotta head out in a bit, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get back on it after I get home later.
edit: Sticker removal complete. I am within a stone's throw of finishing this thing! Spiderwebs and color are all that's left.

Um, the orange books are back ...
Have a nice night out. I'll hoist one to your honor here. :)
