Is it really suppose to have that much of a checkerboard look? The original has it some, but not as much as the new.

I agree, there is too much contrast between the adjacent tiles, which makes the checkerboard more noticeable.

http://i48.tinypic.com/fxxk0l_th.pngLooks pretty good to me, though maybe you went a little bit too far with the saturation. The orange colour does match the orange on the original texture, but the original had some grey patches that reduced the saturation of the overall texture a little. The new texture has similar levels of saturation all over, so perhaps toning it all down a notch might bring the overall average saturation to a similar level than the original's.

The only difference between the 1st and 3rd in NV's scene that I can see is a slight bit of lightening/darkening. There is still way too much of a checkerboard effect, unlike the original in the middle. The original makes it look more like external shadows on uniformly colored tiles, while the new looks like differently colored tiles.

Dunno if anyone has said this already, but the biggest problem is that the black spaces between the tiles shouldn't be black at all. They instead should be a dark orangey beige color, almost the same as the tiles themselves. Kinda like the colors blended together after being downconverted to a smaller size.
It's why the original looks like it's more even on the whole, and the newer one looks more stark by comparison.

It's the indistinct grouting of the original texture I've tried to redress, to give a more tiled effect. The original grout is practically non existent to the left and right of the texture. In game, this gives you two alternating rectangles of closely packed (or poorly grouted) light/dark tiles, a very uncommon pattern in any man's book. My chess board effect is more pronounced because my grouting is more pronounced. If the original had uniform grouting, it too would have a more pronounced chess board effect.

I think the grey areas might have been shiny wood at some point (on the source image), but palletisation might have put paid to that. I don't know.
I've gone for a weathered look, but I'm not convinced myself. It looks ok in game. I'm still working on it.
Edit: Bet you're glad it isn't giant flippin' orange tiles again.
