I've only eavesdropped at the outside location, and it was plenty loud.
[SPOILER]Back when I believed Karras and Truart were really on the other side of that door (fully immersed as I was), the conversation was so loud and clear, I prepared for my quick escape if that door were to open. I thought they could hear me if I made a peep. And having that guard patrolling at the bottom of the steps just added to the tension. Ahh, the first time is the most memorable.[/SPOILER]
I've never tried the other location. I'll have top do that next chance I get.

Ahaha, I actually believed that too! (and I'm an old DOOM/DOOM2/HL mapper even! ... should have known better :P )
[SPOILER]I actually believed that Karras and that damned rust gas would kill me if I stayed behind too long, so the first time, I stopped listening.. and got a failed mission :P The second time around, I stayed the entire time, being incredibly creeped out by Karras voice (who incidentally is made by the same guy who does Garretts voice)[/SPOILER]

His voice irks me as well. I'm just now in Life of the Party and my situation isn't getting any better.
