This is just an interesting story I thought I'd share. I'm on my second time through the game, so I am trying to razz the computer at every turn to see what happens... first I saved the hostages then purposely blew them up, etc.
So, I am on the New York level where Paul is dying and he wants you to activate the signal on the roof. I thought to myself, "No, not gonna do it."
So, loading a saved game from my first time through, to get the subway code (6282), and then reloaded my second time game. There, Iwent through the subway back to Assault and Battery Park without helping the NSF.
Anna Navarre is there, happy to see me, but without words to express her joy.
Up the stairs, Gunther also runs up to greet me, but seems to be having a bit of laryngitis.
Well, at least the troops are chatty, but those darn concrete barriers they put up have some sort of magic force field that prevents jumping over them, even at speed aug level 3.
And, natch, Gunther is invincible so there's nothing left to do but march back down to the subway and do my brother's bidding.

I have tried that before, at first they don't do anything, then I don't know what trigger them, they start to shoot me.  <IMG SRC="wot.gif" border="0">

No, at this point, much though some people would like a bit more convincing, you're gonna have to send that signal for the story to progress.
ION Storm has heard and heard and heard about this...yeah, it makes sense that eventually you'll switch sides because you realize how rotten-to-the-core UNATCO is, but some people do want a bit more convincing. In fact, the only reason I didn't need more convincing is because I got my reflexes from a game called Spycraft and immediately understood the nature of the situation in Deus Ex.
BTW, for those who are curious, I just last night finished going through the entire interactive script for Deus Ex. No, you really can't stay with UNATCO, there is no hidden method, but...
There IS an interesting conversation, which I've never gotten while playing the game, where you apparently don't send the signal and you and Paul agree to go your separate ways. So, it looks as though they almost put in a stay-with-UNATCO path.

I stopped playing it through the second time when I realised I'd be forced to "go good." I wanted to stay blindly loyal to the power mongerers throughout.

What's really strange is... if you send the signal but head straight back to battery park without talking to Paul, the Unatco troops there apparently haven't gotten the order to "shoot to kill". :-)
OK, I realize I'm really messing with the storyline since you don't get the code to the subway until you talk to paul again so theoritcally you shouldn't be able to get back there, it's just fun to see what happens.

Here's what happens if you go to the NSF base, snoop around, but don't find the info cube, then return to the Tonn:
JC: "I checked it out. Sorry, Paul. UNATCO isn't perfect, but I'm not a terrorist."
Paul: "Then I guess we go our separate ways. Too bad it had to be this way."
JC: "Yeah. The offer still stands... if you want to go to Hong Kong."
Paul: No...No, I'll be fine on my own. JC, if you'd only open your eyes for one second... I wish I knew how to convince you."
At this point, no goals are accomplished so you are stuck in limbo until you go back and send the message... I don't know if there's another conversation if you have this conversation, then go back and find the info cube. I would think there would be a "OK, so you're right" type thing but who knows.
Still, it's all fun.

Yes. That is the conversation I referred to in my post above. So
that's how you get it to happen...still, it does look like a stay-with-UNATCO stub, or better yet, a JC-stays-neutral stub - as though the game could have continued on this track, perhaps with JC eventually realizing the crookedness of UNATCO but not in time to save Paul from the killswitch.

I have heard that conservation also, it seems Deus Ex should have some alternatives here, you can still go to HK and work with UNATCO, however somehow the plot can't follow and you must be captured and taken back to MJ12 secret lab. It must involve too much work so that this path is allowed, therefore it was dropped. <IMG SRC="shake.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="mad2.gif" border="0">
