Sorry for being such a newbie but after several attempts at using magic to light the torches on the wall I have had zero success. My magic is 30 and I'm doing it exactly as the message describes. What am I doing wrong? I know you don't need to light them but I can't see a @#$% thing! And I don't want to turn the gamma up much higher.

Are you sure that your performing the casting correctly? Its important to get the direction right. Check your spell book to check the direction of each cast for every rune required for the spell.
Lighting fires doesn't require you to have any magic score higher than what you started out with. At least for the demo anyway.

oh I figured it out - I wasn't aware that both runes were necessary.... the symbol in the book is hard to see and when I put my mouse over it it showed both runes and described the spell.

What I meant was, in your spell book, if you click on a rune it draws the rune in the required direction so that you can see what direction is required when you want to cast the spell. In other words, a rune drawn from left to right is different than a rune cast from right to left, even if they look the same, they will have different names. If, when you are casting, you get a red line through a rune, this often means that you've cast a rune in a wrong direction. I made that mistake myself with the ignite spell and mistook it for a bug, which it wasn't.
