So, I finally found two cornerstones and shot moss arrows into them. So, I get notified that faction status got changed. Imagine my surprise that while the Pagans were now neutral, the Hammers were now hostile (and we were bosom buddies til then "how fare thee Garett and the like). Not quite what I was expecting. Is this by design? It's not like the Hammers would have to know I'm friendly with the Pagans. I'm asking because I may have run across a bug (at one time, even though the Hammers were allied to me, after some huge rumble involving Enforcers, one of those female rogues and said Hammers, they started attacking me. After gassing those two, my status hadn't changed, and the other Hammers still acted like we were best friends). Not to mention that after the unexpected status change of the Hammers I mentioned in the first case, the ones in front of Fort Ironwood let me go in without problems, it's only when I walked up to the priest inside that he started shooting at me. So, will I have to settle with having only the Hammers as friends (it is more practical, since they're everywhere). And as a curiosity, can the game be finished without being allied with either faction?

the game can be finished without being allied to either faction.

Then I must have run into a bug. Enemy factions attack you on sight, right? Well, the Hammer status is hostile and yet I can go right past them all over town, except when I enter Fort Iron Wood. And unless I did something I'm not aware of, I think they changed status after I pleased the Pagans. It's not like it's the only bug in the game. Let's not forget they shipped it with the difficulty menu not working. I don't think I'll be able to get them back to their senses, I've killed plenty of zombies after they switched to hostile and still no change.

Did you plant/burn the tree thingie of the Pagans? I think if you work with one side (for example, you plant it in the Pagan stronghold), your faction status with the Hammers will decline a bit.

And I think inside Ironwood they're a bit more, jumpy, than they are outside on the streets.
I honestly can't remember if that's the mission or not, but you're on their turf rather than somewhere neutral, so their objecting to the presence of a known thief is almost understandable.

The factions do strange things at times...but what would you expect from religious fanatics and forest-dwelling druids?
Once I was in Ironwood and ran across some Hammerites that freaked out at me for no reason whatever (we were buddy-buddy and all that). I ran around trying to avoid them for awhile before eventually slinking back. Naturally, they acted as if it had never happend.... *eyes dart from side to side*
