I am stuck at the very beginning of this mission (dunce). I can't get into the sewer. I have found two entrances, both won't open. The underground entrance has a room next door with what look like controls but the entrance has bars across. Any clues? Walkthrough?

I've read through that thread and it doesn't seem to help. I need to get into the sewers. After falling through the floor at the beginning, I go through double doors into a room with an entrance to the sewers I can't open and bars blocking the entrance to another room. Heeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllpppppppppppppppp!!!!!

Okay, here's the way in from that courtyard you're in right now:
First of all, you shouldn't have fallen through that floor before. You need to stand on solid floor, shoot the one rope arrow into the wooden ledge. then jump onto it. let the floor give way, then rope down halfway and retreive your arrow on the way down. In other words only fall half the distance so you don't take any damage and frob the arrow back to you. If you have serious damage from that fall I suggest you start over again. Also you MUST, MUST, MUST have that rope arrow later adn NEVER lose it. You only get one.
Be that as it may,
Remove that pile of boxes next to the cart. You can use a fire arrow on the red keg for some explosive fun! You won't need the arrow later. See the hole? Climb down it and you'll end up behind the porticullus (grate) opposite where you came in. There are controls there for the sewer door. Look around everywhere, there's a potion for you, too.
I found this to be a very challanging mission requiring advanced jumping and mantleing skills, but I did it first time through in about 2 hours. 2nd time mush faster, of course.

I didn't want to open a new thread for this issue: I want to play this mission, but it seems it's not working with DarkLoader 4.3. It loads fine and then crashes when I start the mission via the ingame menu. At first I thought this was due to a corrupted ZIP-file, but after downloading from three different sources I conclude it's the loader, not the mission. I don't want to mess with the installation, like copying the mission files manually after a backup of my original installation, and then having to recover the backup after playing. Playing through DromEd works alright, but is not my preferred option. Are there any solutions for this?

It can be caused by the briefing video. Try updating Codec Lite Pack.

I was going to try it and Darkloader said that the movie file b20.avi was corrupt. It crashed upon trying to play it so I attempted to unzip it and remove the movie and even that won't work. Windows says it can't read the file and stops the process. Weird as I know I've played it in the past and this is my old copy not a new one downloaded from anywhere.

There seems to be a defective hand.zip out there.
I've got two versions of the mission's zip, one of them crashes and the other one is fine.
Working version:
MD5 checksum:
665bde95778eceeb4a30423fac7d40e1 hand.zip
SHA1 checksum:
c049d915a160f1273753f68a41e257215191d0c3 hand.zip
Filesize:
5046540 Bytes
defective version:
MD5 checksum:
42fcffeb725944182c77e67bf3d575f8 hand.zip
SHA1 checksum:
795dca623047945d30db539e32c787bfe9c954bd hand.zip
Filesize:
5046540 Bytes (same as above)
Darkloader 4.2 reports a warning about a mismatching CRC on file B20.avi upon installation of the defective version.
Check the checksums of your file and notify the site owners who are still hosting the defective version.
I uploaded the working version for you:

Excellent! Thank you, SinisterShadow. I've replaced my version with your working one and it's fine now. :thumb:

I downloaded from southquarter.com (CarelessHand.zip), keepofmetalandgold.com (CarelessHand.zip) and thiefmissions.com (hand.zip), the latter of which has the MD5 checksum "665bde95778eceeb4a30423fac7d40e1". I believe this is the version that works for you, but crashes on me. I tried twice, I even made extra sure I wasn't using another variant of the file. Weird.
