I use a Trackball for "looking" and motion direction. The scroll wheel for Inventory, and the keyboard for the rest.
Up/down/right/left/ahead/behind for views are a snap with the ball. No lost time repositioning the mouse, and a "spin" of the ball gives me instant views.

When I got my laptop, I was hoping for a trackball, but it was not optional except as a peripheral (trying to avoid needing those for the laptop). I've gotten used to using the touchpad (!), but I'll have to look into getting a trackball controller. I'll be going on a two-week vaction starting this weekend, so maybe playing Thief with a trackball will be part of my fun!:D
