You could start with a house, part of a city map, some caves or something. You should start with a closed area that's (almost) finished [it can be "opened" later if necessary]. It should be bug-free as well. This will take some time. demagogue already pointed to the mistakes of Chain Project I.
Anbody who wants to join in can do it at any time without wasting to much time fixing the bugs of other people.
You should discuss the settings before you start.
Such details like the grid, ambient light, weather, the (rough) story and so on must be precise from the beginning.

I think Chain Project 1 would have worked better if it were like a small mission campaign and each author made a separate mis file. This would eliminate too many sets of complicated terrain in the same mission.

Almost a year later...anyone interested in getting this started up again? We have some new Dromeders around here, could be fun to mix some old and new blood.
Some ideas:
1. Start up a request list for anyone interested in joining (probably a new thread in the TEG here).
2. Create a schedule where authors can reserve a time block. Everyone gets 3 days, then has to turn in their work, complete or not.
3. Every author who makes changes adds a version number to the file, and updates the changelog.
4. All submissions must be Darkloader/FMSel ready.
5. There could be a Quality Control guy, someone who could check each version for errors before making it available for the next requester.
6. The guy "in charge" could coordinate all of this.
To avoid the project dragging on forever, we could also put a 6-9 month time limit on it for the final release.
