Is there any point to increasing individual skills (in this case, casting) over 100? The RPGDot guide only refers to spell effects for skill levels up to 100, but the game will let you go higher than that. Will the casting ability increase appropriately even past that limit, or is anything over 100 just wasted points?

I'm actually not sure about that, as I never put so much into one skill. And actually, I'm not sure it would be wise to put so much into one skill anyways...

It's working out pretty well so far. I nuke the shit out of pretty much everything I see at this point, except those floating demons, and fortunately there's only been one so far. Even that first lich in the Temple of Akbaa, who gave me such a horrible time the first time I played, found himself utterly wiped out in about two seconds. The three spell memorization limit is a bit of a hassle (and stupid), but my thinking is that if I crank up my casting skill high enough, it won't matter, because I'll be able to kill everything with one shot.
I did put some points into object knowledge, because the downside of being such a casting fiend is that I tend to burn through the mana pretty quick, so I needed to be able to whip up some mana potions. But other than that, it's all casting; in fact, my strength, constitution and dexterity scores are still at the original starting levels.
I would like to be able to open some chests, but to be honest, I'm having more fun beating the crap out of everything that moves.

Arx is definitely a wizard's game. I tried building an uber melee character once, but got utterly shredded by the Ysildes.

A friend of mine went the melee route and told me he did alright with it, including the Ylsides. I went the stealth route my first time through and did alright with it up to the Ylside bunker, at which point I was mercilessly assfucked. But as a wizard, yes, I am an unstoppable death machine. Everything dies. In fact, it made the whole game kind of pointless, because by the time I hit character level five, there was absolutely nothing that could stand up to me.
Nothing, that is, but those goddamn summoned demons, which soak up my fireballs like they're nothing. Ideally, I'd like to throw around some magic of my own, but the three spell memorization cap - normally not a problem - is a real hassle here. Arx is a fun game, but man, it's got some real balance issues.
