If anyone here is from Serbia, you may have heard of Charles Cather, an American who currently lives there. This guy deserves a lot of respect IMO because he's promoting a country that few people hear much about and dispelling the old media myths about the country. What he does for Serbia's image to the world is wonderful, especially as an American.
It's because of him that I started studying Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian. :cheeky:

A friend and I went to Belgrade for a weekend in 2010. Great place and the people were the friendliest I have come across. We asked a group of guys the directions to a club and they basically let us join the end of their college reunion dinner with them, paid for all of our drinks (wouldn't hear otherwise) took us to two different clubs, paid for everything the whole time, offered us drugs (we didn't want any) and then their designated driver dropped us back to our hotel.
The following day, in Novi Sad, we were undecided about going out, decided to pop out for one and the owner of the bar we went to wouldn't let us pay for any drinks, got the plum brandy he keeps for special occasions out, got us drunk, took us to another of his bars where a traditional wedding party was going on, bought us drinks, passed us over to another of his friends who took us to a club and then when we were leaving that club, we randomly encountered a group of guys who insisted we come to an all night café with them, they bought all of our drinks (again, no discussion) and paid for our cab to the hostel.
I think because Serbia has gone through such hard times and its reputation was so marred by the Milosevic days, that the people view any kind of tourism as a symptom of their country healing from that damage. I have never felt so welcomed in my entire life. Also, the food was great, the beer was great and the prices were great. The history is pretty rich too. I'd definitely go again.
