How about more Obvious conspiracies, the Conspiracy stuff in Deus Ex seemed to rely too much on knowing about already existing theories. Illuminati etc.
Maybe, more obvious X-Files style conspiracies would be cool.
Agree - Disagree?

I agree that the original Deus Ex did rely heavily on the player being familiar with those conspiracies to an extent -- however, I do think that one having no knowledge could glean enough useful and tangible information if they looked hard enough.
Adding X-Files type material might make the game more fun for the masses, but it would also, as you put it, add to the cheesiness factor. And this is definitely a series that you want to avoid cheesiness in!

Mini-Essay
----------
Agreed, it wouldn't be Deus Ex if it were
too Cheesy [Duke Nukem ?]. Although creating local plotlines may add to the intellectual involvement of the player in the action.
Of course the reason that I mentioned this was because in the original I was expecting to investigate quite a few PLOTS and maybe find an underlying cause. Thus the gameplay would have had a greater link to story/plot development.
As it was (apart from the first few levels) where there was cool stuff like being able to talk to the statue of liberty terrorist, and all the stuff about who had control over JC, Paul etc. [Kill Switches].
the player progressively got involved with Shadowy control groups instead. Who were Only plotting to take over the world. This approach of course worked OK and I am sure that many people enjoyed it more than me.
To me, the Experience was better when it was linked to the lives of "everyday folk". [Orange Soda, 'ton]. When it became a case of invading bases, what happened to "amoral scientists" mattered to me less.
Thus there are several aspects to all of this.
1. Local conspiracy plots = create a social context for the player, provide a mystery. But have the negative effect of creating a greater work load for the developers.
2. Sabotage / Infiltration missions, not enough civilians, [joke] maybe they should put more tea-maids in Deus Ex 2 ;).

How about NON-CHEESY conspiracies? This is what I want. I don't think any of the conspiracies in the original were cheesy, hell, I didn't know about a single one of them before I played the game. Maybe I'm stupid or something, but I had never even heard of FEMA...as you can see, I don't follow politics, so this made the game much more enjoyable for me.
I want to see the same type of conspiracies that they threw at us in the original...whether government related or not, they were/are real conspiracies. I don't want any made up conspiracies that have no backing whatsoever.
Heck, it would be nice to see ISA come up with some of their own conspiracies that aren't well known. Something like WW3 being fought over Oil, or is this one already? :)

i think dx is so great exactely because it's about really existing conspiracy stuff. if anyone of you read "the pendulum of foucault" by umberto eco, he/she'll know what i'm talking about.everything is vaguely familiar and that gives me the creeps.
i can just speak for myself, but i don't like the x files stuff that much. a little bit ... ok, and it was dx. but a whole game just about the x files conspiracies .. i dunno. furthermore, x files ain't no conspiracy, but rather invented by hollywood spin doctors --> it's too "artificial" to be interesting over a long period of time.

In the original, you were indeed supposed to investigate several of the things that in the final version you only got to see in newspapers. The moon base/mass driver accident, the White House coup, and several other conspiracies and events (usually but not always involving Page and Simons) had to be taken out of the final game because they needed to get it finished.
I think that accounts for the why-didn't-this-lead-anywhere feel of some of the consipiracies.

I'm not at all familiar with conspiracy theories, but I still found the ones in Deus Ex to be very atmospheric and interesting.

With the Oil prices rising and all, how about a conspiracy based on the Oil Industry?
This is something I'd like to see. Whether it involved real-life people involved or not, just as long as it was a conspiracy about the Oil Industry and how they're intentionally driving up the market. Or is the Oil Industry really driving up the market? Maybe it's an outside force outside of the Oil Industry? Maybe it's our own damn president! Well, depending on where you are in the world, your world leader could be different from mine, but putting it all on one sole person would be a nice touch, or at least a JUST a few key personnel.
