Choice of four. Picking one. - by Digital Nightfall

I think it would have helped if the subtle clues that point you towards the water chip had been implemented as notes in the PipBoy quest status screen. I had an idea of where to go after talking to people in the Hub, but by the time I got there everyone was dead (which made my random completion of the 2 quests in the dead city seem totally inexplicable).
I like that the game isn't railroaded like most RPG's, but at the same time, especially after getting the waterchip, I really feel like I'm just aimlessly exploring places with no sense of what it is I'm actually supposed to be doing other than whatever quests I get from the locals.

I wouldn't have had a problem with the timer had there been an in-game method of determining how I was doing in the grand scheme of things. Bereft of such knowledge I constantly felt the need to hurryhurryhurry which didn't make for a compelling experience.

I hate time limits. F1 suffered for it, vanilla Stalker suffered for it, etc. I hate rushing through a game. Even if the time limit is ridiculously long, I still feel hurried. It completely goes against the way I play games.
BTW, once I found the STALKER mod that removed the quest time limits, I was hooked. It was the only mod I felt the game needed.

I felt an initial pressure too, but the curiosity was stronger. F1 was my first real RPG and I was amazed by how big the map appeared to be and at the same time it felt intimidating. And afterall, games have this advantage that you can press NEW GAME as many times as you like. Now I'm more intimidated by size of TES-like fantasies, only in case of F3 I explored such game thoroughly - and unfortunately most of the time it was a tedious process.

As I mentioned above, the OMG FAIL time limits like in Stalker just feel like arbitrary, pointless gaminess. But what if you blew the time limit for a quest, and some NPC or faction had poached the quest from you? Maybe you'd find them in the process of completing your quest, and a confrontation would ensue, or you'd get a note from them harassing you about it, and it would open up a series of sub-quests where you're trying to track these guys down or whatever.
Being able to dick around for months without anything changing in the world is immersion-breaking, but also having quest-givers suddenly decide they don't need you to complete whatever super-important task they gave you because you spent 5 minutes longer on it than they wanted is even worse.

Poor CPU, continuously processing such detailed lives of dozens of NPCs.

Then I wonder how is it possible that you have embraced F3 with ecstatic, almost uncritical enthusiasm. I repeat for Xth time, it's a fair game in it's own terms, it introduced the Fallout universe to many newcomers, but cmon... Fallout veterans should have better idea? :erg:
Jesus Christ. Are you listening to yourself? Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?
I'm sorry to completely fucking shatter your worldview, but not everyone who enjoys Fallout 1 is a mouth-breathing neckbeard who's spent the last decade festering in the dark corners of NMA. Some of us actually fucking
enjoy games.
"Almost uncritical" is pretty ignorant. FO3 has its issues. But I don't actually, you know,
let those issues get in the way of my enjoyment. Gasp! BLASPHEMY!
Sweet Christmas. We get it. You didn't like the game all that much. But you need to quit hounding
me for liking it. Just drop it already.

Which part of my posts comparing FO1 to FO3 is wrong? Most of the people I know who game in real life have been saying pretty much the same shit to me, I just hadn't touched FO1 in 10 years so I couldn't compare them back to back.

Pretty much everything.
