Making Dogmeat (or really, any NPC) invincible is, in my opinion, probably the most important thing you can do if you plan to have followers.
As said before, tap ` to bring down the console, then type in setessential <baseid> 1 to make an NPC invincible.
Here's the followers' baseids:
Fawkes: 3d34e
Cross: 156e5
Butch: 27f65
Sgt. RL-3: 9426e
Clover: 156a2
Jericho: 00a71
Charon: 156f6
Dogmeat: 6a772

You can also just click on them instead of manually typing their id's.
