Choices, Choices (aka. Which Version?) - by Stainboy

So, not long now 'til the game comes out - but all importantly, which version will you be getting? Common sense suggests the normal edition.... but for an extra £5 (over here, anyway) you can get the SPECIAL EDITION(!!!!11). Marvel at the REPLICA SEPTIM COIN, the BONUS DVD, and the 112 PAGE POCKET GUIDE TO THE EMPIRE! But is it actually worth it? I'm thinking not, but i'm also the type of guy who loves this shit. Remember back in the day when you got all sorts of things in the (cardboard) box? Manuals, maps, etc. - not just a couple of pdf files on the CD. I think it may be worth it.
Thoughts?

ce ftw
In (other) words, Collector's Edition for the win!

Haha, glad you cleared that up. Was very confused for a moment there... (though it doesn't take a lot). :p

I doubt I'll get the CE, although I hadn't previously heard about the bonus DVD. What's going to be on it?

The info you require is (

The bonus DVD will include some extra features like concept art and renders and screenshots and so forth, but the real meat of it is the behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Oblivion. This documentary was done by the very talented folks at thinkfilm ((
www.thinkfilm-inc.com)), who are very well known and have done film work on a lot of very big TV shows and movies (West Wing, Armageddon, etc) as well as some great documentaries. They spent quite a while in our offices capturing the story of what people do and how they do it. The documentary uses our preparation for E3 last year, when we were preparing to show the game for the first time, as a story-telling device to show you all the different aspects of the game's development. We've created a short trailer of the documentary that will hopefully whet your appetite to see the whole thing.

Behind-the-scenes DVDs are pretty hit and miss, in my experience. However, since it's being handled by a third party who specialises in that sort of thing, I have high hopes. I love these inside looks if they're more substantial than "we worked hard hope u like it lol."
I'm almost more excited about the pocket guide than the DVD however; a condensed overview of Tamriel would be nice without having to slog through the (
http://til.gamingsource.net/) existing wealth of knowledge on it. References like that are fantastic, but I'm missing the general background knowledge to put it all in context.
I couldn't care less about the coin.
I miss cloth maps. :(

For ~$10 more on average, Collectors Edition all the way!

Agreed. I don't think companies realise how much we all (well, some of us) like decent game manuals or literature. Plus, i'd rather read something in my hand than on screen - don't think I
really read any of the 'books' in Morrowind, I just opened them for the skill point increase! So a pocket guide would be nice, yeah.

This should be the stuff they'd put in a box rightaway, not just in a 'special editon', to keep people away from downloading games but instead buy the game for the extra 'worth' it has... Is there a map in the 'regular' version though, that might already be worth it to buy that version if it saves me 10 euro's :D
RyushiBlade on 20/3/2006 at 22:38
The way I look at it is this. The original game comes with a map that is identical to the CE. If I buy the normal version, I save $10, and that money can go towards buying the strategy guide (honestly, I wouldn't buy the strategy guide if I wasn't a moderator.) The strategy guide would prove much more useful that a 112 page history book, a DVD, and a replica coin.
Then again, one day the coin may be worth a pretty penny.
