I really liked Butcher's Bay (especially the stealth part of it) except that it was crash mania - first on my XP machine (with high specs) and when I tried to load it up a year ago on my new machine (Quad Core/8800gt/Vista 64). I realize it wasn't tested on Vista - but wonder if this new revision of the engine will fix a lot of those issues. :weird:
It certainly makes me hesitate to get it - as unfortunately, it's one of the games I had the most trouble with (spent more time on Starbreeze forums than in game...lol). Would be curious if those who get it 1. had crashes before and 2. it seems to have been fixed.
If I remember correctly - one big crash area for a lot of folks (and was for me on both OS installs) was after the first cutscene.

Well folks, for what it's worth... I got it (PC version), and I LOVE it. :cheeky:
Pitch Black is one of my favorite movies, ever (scared the crap outta me the first time I saw it) Riddick was the perfect character, the plot was not too convoluted, and the tension factor high throughout. The "sequel" film suuuucked (it was all over the place plotwise with little to no relevance to, well... anything, Vin Diesel decided to out-Riddick himself *ugh* and lots of special effects and shit blowing up - bleh)
I thoroughly enjoyed EfBB, it felt like they took some of the best elements from lots of great games and combined them into one game. My biggest complaint: It was waaay too short! There were times when Vin Diesel took his Riddick over the top, but not too much. And the music was a bit repetitious, and it made me start to expect Jack Sparrow to arrive any minute.
Anyway, they've done more of the same cool stuff with Dark Athena (gotta love the stealth aspect... so very Thief-like, ohh how I've missed that). It's linear, yes... but I don't mind. :thumb::thumb::thumb:
Oh, and the SCAR gun is teh awesome! ;)

As long as reverse engineering files is possible, DRM schemes are completely pointless, I find it fascinating how long it is taking the publishers to figure that out.
Though this won't be an obstacle if one knows where to look. And since you aren't supporting the publisher directly by buying the game anyway, it is a win-win in my opinion.

Reverse engineering takes time. Even a delay can help.
Though, really, you're right - eventually publishers will figure out that DRM doesn't help, and PC gaming will cease to exist completely. Unfortunate, but simply unavoidable given how many PC gamers are functionally thieves.
As for the game....well....
They remastered EFBB.
And then they remastered the crashes.
Stability--.

It uses Tages, which AFAIK can't even be deactivated. Fucking great .

This is true, and it brings up another point to the matter; it will be interesting to see when publishers will release patches to remove the copy protection from their games. Logically speaking it should happen once sales reach a low point, or in other words when the critical period has passed and returned big, meaty numbers. Of course I have no idea how long that period can last, is Bioshock still being bought left and right?

And then what, move on to ass-raping their console playerbase (yes, console games are being pirated as well)? The publishers can keep up this nonsense all they want, but as the customers become more aware of how their privacy as well as rights are being broken, the publishers' plan will have continuously stronger backfires.
That one page on Amazon is not really a good base for doing statistics, but the reviews do look promising, and hopefully it is a snowball that just started rolling down the snowy hill.

Amazon reviews will do jack shit.
Boycotts will do jack shit.
Because for every anti-drm zealot screaming and boycotting, there are 10 screaming and boycotting and then turning the fuck around and stealing just like they've been doing for years.
And yeah, they're gonna go to the consoles. Yeah, there is console piracy. No, it's not in the same league, percentagewise, as PC piracy. And they don't need to assrape anyone, the draconian DRM is built into the hardware. To pirate, you must mod. Mod, and you lose all online playing for all your games. Makes securom look pleasant by comparison.
