Yes they were simple, but they were there. It's not even near 20% of the system in Thief, but you certainly didn't need to blast every single bad guy in sight
Case in point: I recently replayed HL1. When I was first introduced to alien grunts, I managed to sneak past a few without them even noticing me, because I had no more ammo. I was quite surprised myself
You managed to SNEAK past the Alien Grunts? How did you do that? I swear, those damn things have eyes all around their head.
In any case, you gotta be either very good or very lucky. It's been a while since I've last played HL1, but I don't remember being able to do that even once with either them or any other "smart" enemy in the game.

While it isn't really stealth gameplay, I do have fond memories of crawling around in the pipes under the feet of the soldiers. In terms of how that bit came across, it did make me feel like I had to be very, very quiet not to be noticed. Suddenly coming to the end of the pipe and having a grenade tossed my way led to some of the tensest FPS moments in my gaming career.

Or, alternately, dropping a grenade at their feet at the end of "We've Got Hostiles". ;)

Sounds good, though I hope it won't be too 'action packed' at the expense of stealth.

I wouldn't trust Gamespot to be able to do anything more sophisticated than running and gunning.
"Atari promises that Dark Athena's story will take about 11 hours, compared to Butcher Bay's nine."
Does that mean that entire game is ~20 hours(9 EfBB + 11 DA) or ~11 hours(9 EfBB + 2 DA)?

Hmmm, I'm a bit concerned about this little nugget:
Quote:
Atari promises that Dark Athena will be much more focused on gunplay than Butcher Bay was, and it was only a short time before we had regular access to guns.
I don't know about anyone else, but I
liked the fact that it took so long to get a gun. It made the title stand out among the dross.
As it's Atari giving that statement as opposed to Starbreeze, this smells a bit of the publisher's focus group intervention.

The first one - the Gamespot crew played 3 hours of the Dark Athena chapter with their run'n'gun style after all, and didn't quite finish it.

That does sound bad and I'm sure all the people who enjoyed Riddick thought that was one of the plus points. The melee fighting was more than up to satisfying the FPS bloodlust and I hope that Starbreeze haven't forgotten this.

I was surprised too. When I entered the room, a few alien grunts spawned. I said oh shit as I didn't have much ammo left. In another room, there were a few marines. Somehow the marines got into a fight with the aliens. Or something like that. In any case, when I went back to that room, the aliens were in "undisturbed mode". I managed to sneak by them successfully

Yeah. One of the most memorable experiences with Butcher Bay was:
the fight ring sceneI hope they don't take out such scenes. What made Riddick different from other FPSes was that you were given vastly varying scenarios. This provides a change of pace and a different way to play the game
