The Eurogamer review gave it a 10/10, and it didn't even give a proper reason why, apart from mentioning that it's hard to get past the nostalgia so a more objective critique is tough.
As someone who dislikes RPGs, and despises jRPGs, how does this game work beyond its genre?

As mentioned before...
One of the good things about this jRPG is that it´s not about random encounters, you can see your enemies before engaging your fights. Some of then are even avoidable ("blackjacking" guards in a prison).
The art is very nice. It´s from Toriyama, the creator of Dragonball Z.
The combat is extremely cool because of the combo aspect. When 2 or 3 characters attack bar are full they can attack together with one crazy animation. You will always try different combos with different characters. And they are all interesting.

The SNES CT was nearly a 10/10 game already, the added content and other tweaks of the DS version make it more awesome. You can see a list of old reviews for the SNES version here:

You may just not like this type of game, can't do anything about that. But this is -the- best overall RPG to come out of the 16-bit era IMO so if your going to like anything it would probably be this. Is there something in particular you dislike about RPG's?

I hate jRPGs and I think Chrono Trigger is the cat's ass. FF6 too! jRPGs were just plain better in the early 90s before the power of emo friendship became the dominant plot element.

You mean it's not in CT and FF6?
Okay, in FF6 it's love.

Well subtract the "emo" part and you've got it in CT. This whole business of brooding assholes being the main character didn't start until FF7.

Thanks for the reviews MustardCat. I think I will check it out when it arrives.
Also, I've always meant to play Final Fantasy 6 because it seems to be full of character from what I've heard from everyone.

It is. Probably Square's finest moment.

I also have to add that the Mother/Earthbound series is well worth checking out. Any RPG involving Mario, too.

Earthbound was a breath of fresh air.
