First Civ game I've ever hated. I kept telling myself that I'd follow at least one game through to completion before giving up on Civ V entirely, but in the end I couldn't even manage that.
I think I managed to win one game but got bogged down in raging at various stupidities after that. This patch doesn't look like it addresses much of the causes of my rage either. Haven't touched it since the first week after its release which is quite an achievement since I spent an ungodly amount of time on 2 and 4.

Could some of you elaborate a little on the annoyances you've been encountering? I've considered picking up Civ V for the holiday but would like a better picture of what all these changes to the game's formula mean.

Yeah not really sure what's wrong with it? I got a bit burned out on it after a while because it was so addictive, but other than that it's really fun imo. Although it is the first Civ I've played since 2, so maybe I'm missing some amazing advance in gameplay that's now missing from Civ5...
All the reviews I read said it was massively improved, more accessible, more streamlined, the only complaints I read about was that the AI is a bit thick and often forces you into a Conquest victory. From what I gather, this latest patch has just improved the situation there.
I dunno, maybe I am just one of the simple plebs drawn in by the user-friendliness of Civ5. I'm certainly no hardcore strategy gamer.

Well the absence of religion and espionage from Civ IV is a big downer for me, but what really kills it is the performance. Even early on in the game, frame rates suffer and the games hitches frequently, but mid-game AI turns take a painfully long time to resolve. Similarly, leader vignettes take ages to open, and there are some bastards who insist on talking to you every turn. Maybe it's my own fault for playing Epic length games on really large worlds, but if I'm not playing that way, I don't really feel as if I'm playing Civ.

Yeah hadn't thought of that - it does need a very high end system, which is weird considering it shouldn't need to do much intensive stuff. Runs fine on my 2yo system with low to mid-range graphics settings though.
