I promised myself no more Civ after 4, but the combination of hexes + an apparent effort to make the interface suck less = damn it, I'm going to get it.

Civilisation 1 had a charming artistic style. Chunky and colourful. Thats pretty much all I remember though. Was a long time ago.
Then, Civ 2 - so damned addictive, and moddable - I remember making a Star Wars scenario in 1997 or so. (Before SW became really lame).
Since then though, the series seems not credible. Doesnt seem to have advanced in any real way, looks dated compared to the total war game design. The last third of the game always seem to bog down in micromanagement and boredom. Freeciv was an ok implementation, but the AI seemed too good in it, and too predicatable?
More importantly, the depiction of the development of human civilisation is totally wrong from an anthropological, historical, and Marxist viewpoint. :(

Anything that's wrong from a Marxist viewpoint sounds great to me. The real world, for instance.

The people demand proper Anarcho-Syndicalist representation in Civ 5!

BUT WHERE'S ALPHA CENTAURI II, SID? >:[
Keeping Wing Commander, System Shock, Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Syndicate, Ultima etc company in EA's vault.
Though in this case I really can't blame them as selling an IP which is just about guaranteed to sell millions, to a competitor, would take a fair bit of justifying and I think even EA would admit that doing (SM)AC2 themselves would not be a good match.
Sid Meier's Tau Ceti on the other hand...

No it isn't, a Marxist viewpoint assumes a logical chain of events in history.

Why doesn't Firaxis just make a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri? It's obvious that EA will never sell them the rights.
