"Deluxe Edition" comes with an extra civilization. I don't like that idea at all :erg: There's also a free map pack for pre-ordering (the implication being that it will be paid DLC after release) but who plays on pre-made maps anyway?
The release has been confirmed for September though.
(
http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/54678/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-V-Exclusive-To-Steam-Civilization-IV-On-Sale) press release.
Steam has artificially inflated the prices for Australian buyers again to US$80 for standard and US$90 for deluxe. :erg:
Please don't screw this up 2K :erg:

So it's safe to assume that fuddy-duddies stuck in the 1990's and Lunix anarchists will be en masse boycotting Civ 5, since it uses Steamworks?
Nameless Voice on 10/5/2010 at 15:56
I've already come across threads of people complaining about it while searching for something else, so quite likely.

Thanks.
I'm surprised that the usual suspects on TTLG have yet to have a big bawww-fest over this news.
"WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO INSTALL XYZ PROGRAM TO PLAY MY GAME?! HERE'S AN OBTUSE ANALOGY ABOUT CAR SALES/OWNERSHIP THAT BARES NO RELATION TO THE DISCUSSION."
"I'M GONNA IGNORE ALL POINTS STATING THAT AUTO-UPDATES CAN BE OPTED OUT OF AND THAT AN OFFLINE MODE EXISTS."
"I'M KNOWINGLY GOING TO RUN A SERVICE DESIGNED FOR BROADBAND CONNECTIONS OVER DIAL-UP."
"I'M GOING TO KEEP CLAIMING THAT COPIOUS CPU CYCLES ARE BEING CONSUMED BY THE CLIENT, DESPITE BEING PROVEN OTHERWISE."
"CORPORATE MALWARE. HURRR, DURRR. I REFUSE TO FIGHT IN MY NATION'S ARMED FORCES BECAUSE OF DMCA."
"I LIVE IN POLAND."

Glad to have you back, Eva. <3

I never really liked the idea of Steam that much, but now that I'm actually using the thing I've changed my mind.
I still agree that requiring online activation and a program running all the time is not ideal... in a perfect world everything would just work without anything, but who are we kidding? It's unlikely to go away any time soon. Plus, Steam's ingame UI makes it an actual useful program in itself.
Incidentally, offline mode is a completely unacceptable disaster: it makes the game take 5 to 10 whole seconds longer to start!
Sulphur on 10/5/2010 at 17:59
That's quite an improvement, considering that starting games in offline mode used to be an utter crap shoot.
Zygoptera on 10/5/2010 at 23:52
Offline mode is still somewhat of a crap shoot as it will still go online periodically (once a month, iirc), though it's far improved over the total lottery it was. It's the sort of thing you only really notice when it goes wrong and is absolutely fine right up until the point it isn't.

Sorry couldn't hear that over the mumbling, try taking Gabe's cock out of your mouth and restati no can't be bothered
Whereas the Steamfascists who like foisting their trojantastic monument to their own stupidity and cupidity on all and sundr oh fuck it I can't be bothered.
I've never understood the mentality which says that it's good that someone's forced to use something just because you happen to like it, but then I guess I'm not an unreconstructed Nazi fucknuck oh fuck it I can't even be bothered with that.
OMG Steam is charging 80usd why doesn't Gabe love me anymore after I'd given him the best years of my life and let him have all the ana no can't be bothered with that either, especially since this means I definitely won't be paying 80usd for it, sucks for those that will of course.
Let's just skip to the part where dethtoll says he doesn't like forcing people to use Steamworks straight away, unreconstructed fuddy duddy Polish dial up victim that he is. Oh yeah dethy, there's your Joe Normal (well, EvaUnit, so a sort of vague approximation of one, ohoho) guy celebrating everyone being forced to use Steamworks you thought never happened on the internets.

I love Steam, and IMHO it's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in recent memory.
