i found 4 artifacts in the swamps on my first playthrough. I love the new way to find artifacts with an detector. I think it's the best change to SOC. I'm still waiting for more mods for a 2nd playthrough, the Redux mod didn't work well for me.

I don't think there going to be much more mods for it, it's quite unpopular amongst hardcore Stalker fans it seems, many declared it heresy ;)

As many things is CS the detector is both a good and bad idea.
It's a good idea because it adds more depth and thrill to artifact hunting, if you want to look for artifacts you actually need to, you know, look for them, plus it takes one hand so you can only use a pistol.
It's bad idea because you don't really need to LOOK for artifacts at all because CS uses anomaly fields instead of single anomalies here and there like SoC does. So when you see an anomaly field you can be 90% sure there is an artifact inside.
Plus, second and third detectors are too easy to use. It's not fun to have an arrow pointing where the prize is. They should've left it at beeping.

I thought the original Stalker was hard to get into as well, but not like this..
The Swamp is just incredible dull, feels like a boring UT2004 run with bots. Plus i hate the fact how the health will drop if you accidentaly walks 1 mm into a radiated area even if you step out directly. I can totaly understand if it drops when i'm inside the radiated area but i wish it would stop going down once i step out, don't know how many times that has killed me.
There's like a constant health drain all the time in this game, from bullet wounds and from radiation making it unbearable to play, it's just constant bandaging, constant hunt for medkits/bandages and stuff to make radiation damage stop.

Until you find appropriate artifacts, they are must-have in this game. More precisely - anti-bleeding and life-regeneration ones. After that it becomes easier than SoC, because the artifacts are FAR more powerful than in SoC. Yes, the Swamps are very hard.

242: yes i guess you're right, i've never managed to find any artifacts, seems really really rare this time around.

Actually, no. I found 20-30 pieces during my play-through. Every time you see an anomaly field (and they are quite noticeable) know that there is an artifact inside. F.e. there are at least 5 anomaly fields in the Swamps. BTW, they are marked on the map that's on the ground floor of the house you start the game in.

Why? Artifacts are physical objects and all of them emit some form of radiation, why wouldn't a piece of technology from 2011 be able to detect them visually?
It is costly enough to spend a moment in anomaly fields, I sure as hell wouldn't want to walk around in there for a long time listening to a beep; just going right for that artifact I found and walk out of danger again cost me a science medkit and 2 anti-rads.

It's just not challenging. And don't try to logic it, if they want to know what's inside the Zone they can just use satellites, why they won't send just send two batallions inside and sweep through all of Zone, etc.
And I don't get why you people need so much consumables for. If you need to lower your radiation level, that's what artifacts are for. If you don't have anti-rad artifacts, the radiation is such a joke in vanilla you only need few health artifacts(Assuming you won't stand in the radiated area all the time of course) to simply outheal the damage.
If you don't have heal artifacts... then "you're doing it wrong".

But going by a sound alone would be more frustrating than fun in my opinion. I didn't start trying to find artifacts until I had Veles with me (which I bought on the way to Red Forest); the graphical display alongside the danger that anomaly fields pose, makes it a pretty rewarding experience for me. Hopefully I'll find some more artifacts in Military Warehouses.
