If there ever is a live-action Thief movie, I think it will be absolutely impossible for me to be satisfied with whomever they pick.
Why? Because, to me, the only person who would ever have been able to play a good Garrett would be Stephen Russell! Ten years ago when Thief was new, he was still young enough, but now or later he would have to bulk up his physique a little, not to mention wear a wig. Not that I am saying this to in any way insult Mr Russell because I love him to bits and think he is still a great-looking guy, I just don't know if whatever film studio it would be would want to bother, or if HE would want to bother, for that matter.
I have a completely unrealistic dream to make a Thief animated movie or series. Probably never happening, but it's something I like to wish for.

Actually, I believe this to be the most realistic continuation proposal of the Thief franchise so far, possibly with the exception of a comics title.
(I base the latter on the fact that Eidos let Lara Croft enter the Top Cow continuum in a Witchblade "crossover", before the Tomb Raider movies. They just might do so with other of their brands as well.)

When I play(ed) Thief I never had this image of a completely stylistic world before me, instead it was surprisingly real to be somewhere in the City. That's why I think any animated or even Japanese cartoon version would seem somehow artificial to me; cool-looking, without a doubt, but not real.

Pointing out that the game itself was an animation of sorts wouldn't be a meaningful contribution to the discussion, so I won't do that. And I certainly won't mention the cutscenes. ;)
Instead I wonder what could be done WRT Thief machinima, should we ever get that multiplayer patch working... :sly:
Or using The Dark Mod, for that matter. Hm...

Benicio Del Toro. He would make a perfect Garrett. He's dark, brooding, and he can act circles around most of the actors mentioned in this thread.

Viggo Mortenson (or how the hell ever his damned name is spelled), ya know, Aragorn from the Lord of the Ring films. I think he'd make a good Garrett.
That and the following:
R. Lee Ermey for Artemus
Michael Dorn for Orland
Brent Spiner for Constantine

Just a side note: Sean Bean's German voice actor is the one who spoke Garrett for TMA. However, both of Garrett's voices (a younger one for TDP also) sound less...well...breathy and guttural than Stephen Russel, that's why our impression of Garrett is AFAIK that of a slightly "thinner" and sometimes even more nervous (I mean never resting) guy.
And again, I don't think wearing a hood makes Viggo an adequate Garrett actor. He's a little too sturdy I believe. In fact, I think he could indeed be rather ugly. Street child, you know...
