I've surmised elsewhere that Glyphs rend the fabric of universe/spacetime/dimenson etc.
As for the glowing letters on the Ring: because Sauron was/is a spirit of fire, and having poured part of himself into the Ring and having forged it in the fires of Orodruin it's the least to be expected :p
Light (and thus fire), negative light (the corpse-shimmer of Minas Morgul, for instance) and Unlight (Shelob and Ungoliant, also some of Sauron's works) have great importance in Tolkien's legendarium.

Didn't Ungoliant drink the light from the Two Trees of Valinor? Maybe that's the positive light turned to negative.

Yeah. The trees lit the world silver and gold before the need for a sun and moon, right?

That she did, but the darkness she belched forth was Darkness, or Unlight, a totally new thing. So not negative light, which was the corpse-light of Minas Morgul, which was simply that sick green light "which illuminated nothing".

Right.

Hey, other LotR fans! That is confirmed, Ungoliant could spew out "anti-light" that wasn't just darkness, but a powerful force which sucked all light from an area. However, this is not the same as the green light of Minas Morgul which was a form of dark magic light.

Indeed. I'll write my diplom about Tolkien :cheeky: To be precise "The role of curse in Tolkien's legendarium".
