I thought i'd try this game because It came free with my video card. I've had it sitting on my desk since february so I finally decided to fire it up tonight.
First annoyance is that I have to register an account to play the game. Is it an online only game? because I had the impression that It was an RTS.
Second annoyance is that It prompted me to download a patch or it wouldnt' let me play.. okay.. thats fine. so 127 mb and 20 minutes later.. i'm ready to go..
fire the game back up.... it says i need to download the patch... wtf.. okay 114 mbs and another 20 minutes .. and i fire it back up again.
... it tells me i need to download the patch. this time its only 7 mb. ok sure.. so 3 minutes later.. fire it up again.
this time its 40 mb..
Am i going to get to be able to play this game this month or what?

Ahh the joys of PC gaming...
When you do get it up and running it will be well worth it, it's a fantastic game.

That's nothing compared with trying to patch a freshly installed MMO.

you should've gotten the lastest full patch and install over it, the auto-updater just puts you through all the incremental ones. I never use auto-update except for steam where it actually works and installs the latest one.

Or disable your network connection before you start it up, it'll just do a disc check and you should be good to go.

More like joys of Relic gaming.
Be happy you didn't want to play Dawn of War series. You quite literally have to download about a gigabyte of patches. And contrary to what mothra says, you DO have to install them all in order. Apparently the only way to make changes to few units is to replace
whole fucking database.
I mean jesus fucking christ, you're not curing cancer here. It's just a line in some text file. I don't have to download half the fucking game again just to change it. It would actually be ten times easier if they just TOLD players what changes they did and we'd use the database editors to type it all ourselves. Or shit, if you can't code databases, make it an SVN or something. IT REALLY IS NOT THIS HARD.
I wanted to rant about it for a long time.

The first patching process is a nightmare, yes, especially if you only have the original game and not the expansion. After that, though, if the game ever requires a reinstall you'll have the patches saved to a folder on your hard drive.
You may also need to fiddle with your port forwarding as well, if your router gives you trouble.
By the way, when it's all patched and ready, I have a (
http://www.ventrilo.com/) Ventrilo server with plenty of people who play CoH. 69.12.52.132 port 4416. Join whenever you'd like.

I actually have Dawn of War, though its one of those games I bought and put on the shelf. I've never played it for more than 30 minutes because I've been interested in other games. I've never patched it. Thanks for the heads up.

Fuck me, I had to port forward every fucking port that DoW used before I could even connect successfully to the lobby.
