In my case, I played Thief 3 first, and am now checking out Thief 1/2 (just finished 1).
Some observations.
Graphics are better in Thief 3 - well duh!
Guards are smarter in Thief 3, but they chase you poorly.
You usually have enough ammo to kill anything that is annoying you in Thief 3, but not in Thief 1.
Thief 1 is huge in comparison to Thief 3. Personally, I prefer the size of Thief 3, except in the city.
Thief 3 voices are much better and more entertaining.
Finding shadows is a little bit more difficult in Thief 1 (more realistic in my mind).
Thief 1 is MUCH harder than Thief 3.
All in all, I found myself enjoying the gameplay of Thief 3. It is nice to see that they were improving the game with each version.
In my mind, return to the Cathedral was nowhere near as scary as the Cradle, although I think the guards in the cathedral were more difficult than the inmates. You can only hear that awful moaning for so long before you start to ignore it. Cradle how a much more varied method for scaring you, which in my opinion was quite effective.

Did you say: Improving with each version? I think they are back-to-front, with T1/G being the best. I'm sure most would agree with me on that one.

Thief 2's my favourite, followed by Thief 3, then Thief G.
Storywise it's Thief 3, Thief G, then Thief 2,

Thief 3 is good but controlling Garrett is a bit of a doozy sometimes. Not to mention all the other problems. The Cradle is excellent though. Bes ever!;)
Thief 2 is my favourite though. But Thief Gold is awesome also. Thief 3 is definetly the weakest, but still good. Darn you Xbox! (the dumbing down for it)

I think the bottom line, at least for me, is that there can be no comparison. Imho, DP & DS are two completely different games. I've chosen this stance after long consideration and the decision to try to regard DS as a game unto itself, even though Garrett is still the main character. It just seems unfair to try and compare the two, since in most respects they were so totally different as to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. Sure, I liked DP much more than DS, but I also found certain aspects of DS to be enjoyable as well.
I can't help it that MA was and still is my favorite of the three.

In my opinion DS > DP by far. I wonder if for nostalgia reasons people liked the first better? My perspective is rare in that I played Thief 1 after playing Thief 3. Of course, when it comes to discussions about "better", each opinion is equally valid.
Note: One other reason why I liked Thief 3 better. You got to run around the city and go where you pleased. You saved your money and gear, giving the game more persistence.
Note 2: I am now playing Thief 2, and liking it better than Thief 1. More interesting voices in the game, allowing me to enjoy the fun of listening in on other's conversations.

This looks like a good message to ask my little "bottom line" question.
In terms of "replay-ability" which do you prefer out of all of the Thief series?
(Please, use only the Thief OMs. . . And thanks!) :thumb:

I thought Guards in T1 was much smarter(vigilant) than that of DS,
And in T1 headshot doesn't work!

I am just now starting Thief 2 so couldn't comment on the replayability of that. Thief 3 has a lot of replayability in it (I have replayed it once so far). Thief 1 I have no desire to play ever again.

Thanks, Fian.
For me, I played all the way through T3 and then all of those 18 or so T3 FMs.
And then I replayed The Cradle, at the max setting, immediately afterwards.
(Also I was looking for a "spooky hook" to tempt my Silent Hill group with.)
And just today, I finished a very slow and ghostly replay of T3, while using all of the ideas that I have gathered around this very fine group of taffers.
(So thanks a bunch for making that replay a lot more fun, folks!) :thumb:
