COMPLETE THIEF 1,G,2,3 SETUP GUIDE for windows
Here it is, the detailed guide with tips and tricks, thanks to DJ Riff, maker of tafferpatcher
**THIEF GOLD, 2, T3DS- SETUP ON WINDOWS XP, Vista, 7 (64 bit) STEP BY STEP instructions**
Notes:
* All games must be installed in a custom folder such as C:\games\TG or T2 or T3 etc, doesn't matter on the name just keep it short. DO NOT install into the default system protected folder : C:\Program files as the patches need to modify the game installations. This is the main thing to avoid; the patches will take care of the rest thanks to the people who made them. Also, the games won't need a CD to play once the patches are applied. Install each game before starting patch applications.
*for windows xp, vista, you may need to run T1,TG, T2 as administrator. Just right click the icon and select ‘run as administrator'.
*When in doubt or need help, go to TTLG.com forums where you can find almost all patches, files, or links to files, help, issues solved, or anything really. It's a pain at first, though none of these steps are hard, once you have clear instruction, as I have compiled here, and tested the games on my win7 system.
*Download only the latest patches as posted
*Also, after you have all games patched and running smooth, as well as T2X, darkloader, and modern loader, it is good to have 6 shortcuts, one for each application. For instance, one each for Thief gold original, thief 2 original, thief 3 original, darkloader, T2X, and lastly Modern loader, this makes using the programs independently, convenient. I found you have to right click the icon of each and hit ‘create shortcut', a copy of shortcuts won't do.
THIEF GOLD
1. Install TG or T1 from collection disc (or from regular disc, copy all files) to a custom made folder, such as C:\Games\TG, NOT in a default C:\Program files directory, as noted above.
2. Check if the video files run properly in game folder\movies if you like
3. Right click game icon and run as administrator, to test it; for PCs with over one CPU, the TFix will make your shortcut run the game on one CPU only to avoid freezes or crashes
4. Download TFix 1.10 zip file from TTLG forums.com, for T1 or TG. Extract file anywhere (downloads folder), then run TFix application, install all components to the TG installed folder from earlier.
5. Open cam.cfg file in the TG folder with notepad, change game screen size at the bottom to a compatible resolution for your computer like 1920x1080 or 1600x1200 , leave it in the format 1920 1080 (the TFix should automatically do this, just check to be sure)
6. Run game and see how it works, the fixer should have made the game run smooth.
THIEF 2
1. Install Thief 2 to a custom made folder such as C:\Games\T2 as noted earlier for TG.
2. Download tafferpatcher at ttlg.com, for T2, and follow installation instructions (this needs to be installed in the Thief 2 installation folder you specified earlier)
3. Let the tafferpatcher defaults be run; don't install the game since the game is already installed. Do a full install of game patches, then at the end, set desired resolution to match your computer and monitor as you will. You should have a fixed T2.
THIEF 3 DS
*This game is newer and has almost no issues running on modern systems. Install to its own custom folder as noted above, like T3DS or similar. The only patch you want for this game is the thief 3 widescreen patch, found on TTLG forums as well. You can run in almost any resolution, such as 1920x1080p, which looks great! T3 is updated.
Thief G, T2, T3 fan missions loaders, instructions
*Note- To be safe, make a copy of your original TG, T2, and T3 folders after all patches (TFix, tafferpatcher, T3 widescreen patch, have been applied) and change the folder name slightly on the COPY to TG-FM's and T2-FM's (these will be used for fan missions exclusively.) For T3 just make a copy called T3DS-copy (thief 3 must run from original folder, with the Modern loader using this as the directory. This copy is just in case anything goes wrong or you want to take off Mloader, in which case you can just overwrite the original T3 folder with the files in the copy). You may have to copy, cut, and paste folders around to get a copy of TG, T2, T3, in the same programs or games folder (i.e. to desktop, then modify name, then back to games folder). These copies will be run separately for fan missions or custom campaigns and will not affect original TG, T2, T3 installation or games. That way you won't have to worry if you want to delete the copy and re-install some missions or campaigns or something.
Download Dark Loader (T1,TG,T2) for loading fan missions
*Dark loader notes:
* This is the fan mission loader for T1, TG, T2; it installs and loads fan missions.
1. Download darkloader at darkloader.net, and put it in the games folder next to your other thief folders for convenience.
2. Run it after all games are up to date and patched.
3. It will show a screen to set up directories for Thief 1, Thief 2, etc. and a directory specifically for fan missions, which is separate from other folders, i.e.: DL FM's (make this separate folder first, then select it as the missions directory)
Make sure to specify your COPY folders you made earlier of the original TG, T2 folders called TG-FM's or T2 FM's, for each game and the DL FM's folder is a separate one for just fan missions.
4. Download a fan mission from TTLG.com links or offsite links listed there, and add the zipped file -DON'T unzip; just drop it in to the FM download folder (directory specified with dark loader), i.e. DL FM's
Use darkloader to run all fan missions, create a shortcut of it on your desktop if you like.
5. Once the fan mission has been added to the correct directory you specified earlier as DL FM's, the fan mission will appear in dark loader. All you do now is hit 'install only', wait for it, then hit ‘play' to play the mission.
6. After playing a fan mission it's a good idea to renormalize darkloader and keep it clutter and error free. Make sure to hit 'install only' on your original game (TG or T2) between each and every fan mission played- this will erase previous mission and renormalize the loader; then you can add a new FM. Lastly, on the FM download sites, the missions are specified as T1, TG, or T2, sometimes T3 in which case only Modern loader applies. This isn't too critical; most T1 missions will load on TG and whatnot. The darkloader knows which game to run each mission with and it shows you.
T2X campaign
1. Download T2X campaign (find through TTLG or google it); it is a separate T2 campaign, which needs to be installed inside the copied folder you made of T2 original installation. Install it into the thief 2 copied folder: T2 FM's (the T2 copy you made) and it should run fine. If not here's a code you can edit in the darkinst.cfg file with notepad:
cd_path e:\ or if that doesnt work try ;cd_path
install_path ..\
language english
resname_base +..\res
load_path
script_module_path +..
movie_path movies
*noticed an issue with crash upon mission start, the fix was go to t2x folder within the thief 2 folder T2X was installed into, and rename the movies folder to movies1 or anything really, movies2 or something, then it was fixed
*noticed an issue with in-game movies not playing, easy fix by going to the folder: ‘codec' within T2X which is inside your T2 copy ( or should be) and run the application VP3 codec, select windows XP if you have windows 7, it will work fine. Also, rename the movies1 folder back to movies. T2X should run fine.
T3 modern loader for FM's in T3 DS
1. Download the modern loader for T3 fan missions (check through TTLG.com or google it).
2. Make a separate folder for it in your custom program files or games folder you made; call it T3DS-Mloader if you like and put the Modern loader files in it. Inside it make a folder called MLoader Missions (for the FM's)
3. Run Mloader application. Thief 3 should be selected at top, original install selected (generally), 7z for the zip program if you use 7zip (not important). The game and save game folders should be automatically specified with original game folder for T3 such as T3DS for game folder. The savegame folder for fan missions should go in the MLoader folder you made separately such as T3DS-Mloader\savegames (should auto-specify). The two bottom directories for Fan Mission and FM installation should be the same folder, just put them within T3DS-Mloader folder you made earlier and make these directories into a new folder called Mloader missions or whatever, within your T3DS-Mloader folder.
4. Use the same procedure for darkloader - download the T3 mission from thiefmissions.com or similar mission site. Drop the zip file into the mission folder specified for Mloader (Mloader Missions you created), then it should show up in the modern loader application when its running.
Make sure Thief 3 is selected at the top, then hit install, then run the mission. Keep the previous missions erased if you're not playing them as with dark loader above, to keep things smooth and uncluttered, avoiding problems.
5. If Mloader doesn't run the mission after install, try a full install instead of original for the fan mission. If it still doesn't work, then go to the Mloader Mission folder you created and click on the mission folder in question with the files, click on the folder called SYSTEM, then click on the T3 icon to manually start the fan mission there (kind of a pain but it's worth the mission).
*Noticed an issue trying to exit TDS during a fan mission load, caused a freeze, or could happen when loading a saved game. Fixed by going to title menu, options, change the resolution to 1600x1200 or 1024x768 or something smaller and compatible, and it fixed this. There was a big number like 99281231x12312341 which is incorrect and shows a compatibility issue, just downsize the resolution to its appropriate max level or a mediocre level and it should run fine.

5. open cam.cfg file in thief gold folder with notepad, change game screen size at the bottom to a compatible resolution for your computer like 1920x1080 or 1600x1200 , leave it in the format 1920 1080
this shouldn't be necessary - TFix will detect your screen resolution and use it automatically.
adding an universal darkinstall.cfg for t2x (EP must be installed in thief2 folder\mods for everything to work properly):
Code:
;cd_path ..\
install_path ..\
language english
resname_base ..\mods+..\mods\EP\EPBooks+..\mods\EP+..\res
load_path ..\t2x+..\
script_module_path ..\t2x+..\
movie_path ..\t2x\movies

I wouldn't recommend using MODS subfolder in Thief 2 because with all the mods installed there the resname_base string will look like:
resname_base .\mods\t2water+.\mods\t2skies+.\mods\EP\EPBooks+.\mods\EP+.\mods\NTEXdds+.\res
Which is deadly close to 80 chars limit, exceeding which will render the main RES folder invisible for the game.
