The only Thief game I played was Thief 2: The Metal Age. I was wondering what I might need to do to further my Thief gaming to the optimum. I am unsure of all this Thief Gold malarkey. Do I need both Thief: The Dark Project andThief: Gold? Or is the whole Thief: The Dark Project game included in Thief: Gold? Also, there seems to be an inconceivably large amount of fan-made missions and the like, both completed and "in the works". If I were to make a donation to The Keep Of Metal And Gold and receive "The Complete Thief Package", would this mean I have all of the Fan Missions up to the date at which I made the donation, and as a result would not have to go into all this downloading malarkey? Anyway, my question is, if I have Thief: The Dark Project, Thief: Gold, Thief: The Metal Age, and Thief: Deadly Shadows, and all of Komag's DVDs from TKOMAG, would I have everything Thief, and not have to worry about downloading or purchasing anything else? One more thing. It is apparent that there is more than one version of Thief, or "patches". Are there any differences, and if so, which is best? Is there anything else I need worry about?
Thank you for your help, Michael
Um, the OCD thing was a joke, Zillameth, don't go referring me to any of your nutty female friends! But I do like to have the very cream of the crop.

In fact, don't tell me. I'll probably end up going insane.

You're going to get quite a mix of responses, I think.
I'll answer a couple items.
Thief Gold is Dark Project plus three more missions and a "Blooper Reel". Some changes have been made to the DP missions in Gold to tie in the three newer missions. You also get a bunch of extras and goodies in Gold that you may or may not appreciate.:D
Yes. The patches make a difference, obviously. Some things are fixed, some things are tweaked. If you have problems installing or playing the games, you should know which versions you have.;)
If you collected all the games and bought KOMAG's discs, you'd have most of what's available. It would not end there. There are new things getting released all the time, mostly small things, but there are big things getting put out there, too. If you have to have it all, good luck with that.

If you can acquire Thief Gold (a rather big if theses days), you don't need The Dark Project, as all the original missions are included in the Gold version (some slightly altered) plus three bonus missions.
In case you've "only" got The Dark Project, there's a downloadable fan patch that allows you to play FMs which are based on Thief Gold as well.
*notes down malarkey as word of the day*

And I don't need to have it all, just the good stuff that's actually worth playing.

Thief Gold is basically The Dark Project plus three missions. There are updates and modifications to the other twelve, but these are not big enough to be worried about. I'm not sure whether Dark Project fanmissions would work with Thief Gold, however.
I'm not quite sure about the exact content of Komag's DVDs, but I would assume they are the same as his online archive. This archive is huge, but incomplete. Nevertheless, getting the DVD seems like a good investment. It will save you a lot of downloading, and playing through all these FMS will take months, giving you plenty of time to download the rest.
If you want "the complete experience", you don't really have to bother with absolutely every single mission there is, but you should get Thief 2X. It's a fan-made campaign for The Metal Age, practically a new game with it's own main character (whom I honestly don't like) and some cool new ideas. Komag's DVDs seem to have it.
The patches mostly fix bugs. They also introduce a few new ones, but nothing significant. Using the patches is highly recommended. Particularly in case of Deadly Shadows there is little point in playing without the patch, because it removes a very nasty bug related to difficulty settings.
There is a fan-made modification to Deadly Shadows called The Minimalist Project. It makes the game a little more similar to the previous parts, and also more difficult. I'd suggest playing unmodified version first, and then trying out the mod.
There are technical issues with first two games performing unstably on newer systems. There are known solutions to most of them. You can find all relevant information here, on TTLG, in forum FAQs.
As far as some female friends of mine are concerned, personality disorders are cute, so don't worry. :) Just don't let the game make you look for every last piece of loot.

Oh, and thanks for your help so far, people!
