Even a pedant like you can understand the jist of what they're talking about - keeping things true to the Thief world and universe. That could apply to anything, and certainly could extend to story, atmosphere, and environment, which ties directly to textures.
Return back to your hole in the ground, little man.

Hey don't fight children. You are both right. Thief is one of the games that even when changing all the textures to new ones wouldn't hurt lore too much. But, it would hurt it, especially for purists, who want to see exactly what the developers intended for the player to see. "Maybe there's symbolism hidden there". Especially when it comes to textures mods that change how paintings, stained glass and stonework mosaics look. I mean, there IS lore there.

You can't stop saying lore, can you? It's like you don't even realize how dumb it sounds.

The Enhancement Pack v2.0 is both an object overhaul and a terrain texture overhaul, and is the most faithful to the originals. It tries to be "the same, but better."
The original Enhancement Pack is obsolete - it only contains the objects and isn't as up-to-date as the EP2 even in terms of those. Do not use it (except maybe if you want its high quality objects but want to use one of the other texture modes.)
The HD texture mod significantly changes the appearance of the game. It contains more textures than the EP, but most are very different from the originals.
The Necro Age is somewhere in between. It is fairly faithful to the ideas behind the original textures, but makes everything much darker, dirtier and grungier.

I like the NecroAge texture pack a lot, I think it strikes the right balance between retaining the feel of the original while bringing in an interesting and darker direction to them.
I like the others too, but I must say that I find the HD mod to go a bit overboard with the texture detail and some places feel too harshly cramped with some noisy textures used.

Saying? Sounds? This is a text forum.

also, (unless I've missed some update), NecroAge should have more T1/TG exclusive textures than EP2 at the moment.

You said it too. :p
If players use drop in replacements its important to use those that are visually consistent with the originals because of alignment issues.
I have used some old textures from TG in LS5 Part 2 because I wanted to give my Hammer temple a little feel of the haunted cathedral.
