considering buying Team Fortress pack... - by lost_soul

I'm considering spending $11 for the team fortress collection on Steam. Sure, I hate the idea of Steam, but I miss poisoning players on the other team and then running like hell as the medic! :) I miss sneaking up on unsuspecting snipers and knifing them in the back as the spy. I miss turning incoming scouts and medics into chunks as a soldier when they drop down to the basement and try and steal my flag.
Are there still lots of TFC servers running with *REAL* players? I would like to try TF2, but I'm not too crazy about it due to the lack of grenades. Concjumping was an art that should be rewarded, not taken out of the game!
The price is so low now that it is pretty much an impulse buy, and if I even get 10 hours of enjoyment out of TF2, it would be well worth the money.

Even lost_soul is considering getting on Steam? Will wonders never cease.
I don't know about TFC. Last I looked there was a very small, very loyal playerbase, but the problem is similar to that of Counterstrike- the only people still playing TFC and CS1.6 are the assholes who refuse to upgrade their hardware past 1999 standards and/or are massive mega-elitists who ban you for "playing the game wrong."
You missed the boat with TF2. TF2 got rid of a lot of things I hated about TFC, up to and including grenades (you can still concjump as soldier and demoman though- I have a couple funny stories) and made the game simpler- and in a fast-paced game like TF2, simpler is better. The problem is that the class updates have been hit or miss- the medic's equipment is clearly better than the default and the achievements required to unlock them are stupid, but the pyro and heavy equipment are very much a matter of preference and the achievements are more balanced- and when they added crafting, things started to go downhill. The game is mostly about hats, now, and the playerbase has gone completely fucking derp retarded.
I used to have a lot of fun with TF2, though. Like the time I happened to observe a demoman trying to grenade-jump his way from balcony to balcony in 2fort. Only he kept fucking it up, sending himself flying upwards rather than across. So I turned on my mic and set it up (it doesn't really have a stand and I don't use voicechat because I don't need to listen to 14 year olds screaming for cookies) and switched to sniper, and right when he'd set off his grenade, I'd yell "PULL!" and shoot him out of the sky. Did this five times (got a domination) until he started screaming fucking hacker, and switched to sniper to try and take me out (that happens a lot). Five more headshots and he threw a fit and left the server.

First Steam... then hats.

Then Steam sales, then being Hunter bait in L4D sessions.

I haven't played TF2 since 2008, and don't care for entrenched pro-player shenanigans, should I re-install it?

None of that in TF2, unless you go looking for competitive servers, in which case you fucking deserve it.
It's main problem right now is that there is a massive disconnect between how the playerbase actually plays the game and how the designers 'intended it'. Valve design and patches around 6v6, maybe 9v9 with long respawn times. I've seen nothing to indicate they've even tested 12v12 at all, the 'recommended' maximum. alf the servers, and I'd wager 66% of the populated servers, are 32-man instant respawn, and thus represent most of the actual hours played. Valve has their head perpetually up their ass though, so they ignore this reality. Makes for balance issues.
Then you've got the hats. Precisely 2% of all TF2 players give a shit about hats, but the other 98% fucking love bitching about hats. Fucking Love it. People will bitch about hats in the face of major balance, performance, and stability issues.

Well I've tried to submit my account information at least five times now, but the F***ing thing keeps telling me to retype the F***ing characters to proove that I am a human. Apparently this company really doesn't want my business.

Or maybe you simply can't type. I mean, you keep typoing "fucking" over and over.

Okay, I got it working by installing Steam and *THEN* creating the account from inside steam. I've been enjoying TFC for the past two hours and will download TF2 tonight while I sleep (if I do). My Internet connection sucks. ) :
