General question, do you guys think Constantine's guards in The Sword were monkey beasts in disguise? Or do you think that they were human and once Constantine's Dark Project began springing to life he turned them into Trickster minions with magic?
I can't find anything to support a conclusion, but I think it's more fun to believe they were once human, because that makes their fate that much more terrifying.

I always thought they were human and fled when the whole 'turnover' thing happened, to be replaced by the ape-beast thingies.
On the flip side, those guards looked sort of weird, so maybe they were apes in disguise. But you're right. The idea that they were human, then when the whole place changes - they're turned into ape-beasts too is rather terrifying and creepy!. :wot:
I think for cases like that, when there's not a clear-cut direction for the story. . .its open for your own interpretation. Sort of like how Garrett himself is rather vague, and each player ends up building up his character according to their own ideas. Some of the story elements are the same way. It could have happened in various ways, depending on the ideas you, as the player, bring to the situation.
I think thats one thing I personally loved about the original games. They were set up so there was enough to guide you along, but there was still a LOT that the player themselves could fill in for themselves while they played. There are 'suggestions' as to what might have happened, but nothing was actually developed about it, so you're free to have your own ideas too.
But now you mention it, I do sort of like the idea that the guards are 'changed' too. Its much more in keeping with the story than they're just replaced.

A slightly tangential question: In some sources (e.g. the T1 walkthrough at TheCircle), these creatures are referred to as "ratmen". Has it been "officially" confirmed - and if so, where - that they are indeed supposed to be monkeys?

They are monkeys, their files calls them that (or possibly Ape I cannot remember exactly), and if you extract the texture at look at it it is quite clearly a monkey.

A wiki doesn't qualify as official in my book, but if they're called monkeys or apes in the game files, that settles it for me. (Calling them apes would be a bit odd, though, since apes don't have tails.)

The correct response then is to
not post.
As for Constantine's "human" guards, I believe they're actual humans (probably very well-paid ones). If memory serves, there's a readable somewhere about a guard getting in trouble for wandering into the wrong part of the mansion, or something like that.

yes - here on Earth. so it's a moot point, as the Thief realm is not on Earth. and btw, a world where trees walk, animals talk, elementals fly around, humanoid bugs spit out swarms of flies, giant spiders prowl sewers, dead rise from their graves - and (demon) apes having (spaded) tails is the one thing that's bothering you?
also fishmen, a demigod, and a plant lady. I'd say a tailed ape is the
least crazy beast out of the group.

Seeing their swords made me think that they were the mansion guards, I remember Viktoria telling Garrett that the guards were "tough and organized" - so perhaps they were Constantine's creations in disguise.
Seeing the monkey beasts with swords made me think that they could've been the guards from his mansion. I did a bit of research on it and the models for the guards and the models for the monkeys have the same swords + the outfits the guards wore are partially displayed on the monkey beasts. I think it's a shoulder piece + the belt area are the same from both monkey + human. So there's def some kind of connection.
But as I said in the original post, it's far more twisted to think he turned the humans into monkeys.
The picture in the link at bottom of page that Voodoo posted shows both models and the similarities.
