Whoa! New players / yet to buy people, don't read this thread to be put off by criticisms of Deus Ex.
This is for people who have played Deus Ex and enjoyed it, to point out things which could be slightly changed to improve the atmosphere / game-design.
My first criticism of Deus Ex is that some of it seems too "player/situation oriented", in other words there are situations and or characters in the world which give the impression that they have been put there to respond to the player.. rather than existing to interact with other inhabitants of the world.
This is especially true of characters who only have several responses .. and don't do much else. For example the girls at the (Hong-Kong) club, or the "Madame".
It would help if there was more of a feeling of a world going on independently from you. Ie. Having characters interact with other characters more, in varied ways.

Dont forget it was just the first Deus Ex title and i feel what they did with this was revolutionary enough, if it had been any bigger it would have taken at least another year to complete. By that time it may have been too late to compete. I feel that Deus Ex was released at just the right time.
For the sequal or expansion or whatever, i would love to see some improvement in the AI, and Direct 3D compatability.

Hrm.. I'll grant that many interactions seemed a trifle contrived, but more than a few characters did interact with one another; they chatted, flirted, complained, and shot at each other.

I would have liked to have been able to reassign the Augs (F3-12). Personally, having to stand still, search for the F12 key (I mean, who plays this during the day?) and then repeating it if I wanted my other Augs left on really, really, really grates on me. I don't like having to move either hand more than two keystrokes away.
PS If it sounds like I'm scratching, it's because I am. This game was nearly perfect. If there were such a thing, this game would have honourary perfection.

Remember also that Deus Ex came on One CD, and that's with speech files, at least 10 locations, comprising usually 4 maps each, and the ability to wander at will within a location.
It would've been nice to have an even more totally convincing world, but not if it would involve disk-swapping or restricting the sales to those with a DVD-ROM

You can reassing the aug keys with the patch. Of course, if you're not into deathmatch, 30 megs can be kinda big for just key reassignments and a few bug fixes...

I would not have minded at all, if they had allowed the sun to come up once or twice. The perpetual gloomy darkness became a turnoff for me, by about the time I reached the gas station level. Yeah, I know it's good for hiding in the shadows, but I think the game's "replayable" quality is hurt by this.

I would have liked ...no! LOVED to have guns akimbo! Shogo, Blood 2, Counterstrike and Hitman had this. Realy, how hard is it reverse the pistol-model and put one in the other side of the screen and make the reloding time a bit longer. It's doesn't take a genius to program this, and the game kinda reminds me of "The Matrix"; subway, JC's outfit and the ridiculously high jumps of the speed-aug and guns akimbo would just have made the Matrix-feeling stronger. So why didn't they? Didn't they come to think of it maybe?
Hmm, maybe I'm saying to much now? I'm only at pistol-skill: advanced yet.
Do you get guns akimbo on master-level?
If you do, I'd look realy stupid. Like this guy -->
