Rob's right. Before NewDark T1/TG missions were actually played on a different engine, with different lighting and stuff. But nowadays the vast majority of people play TG missions using the same NewDark engine as T2, so there is literally no reason not to make the mission using T2 Dromed and just make design decisions that emulate TG.

I think some authors just like the cachet of releasing an actual Thief Gold mission, and giving everyone who plays a genuine old school feeling. skacky and StinkyKitty come to mind here. I have been debating this for my contest mission - I want to do an old school mission, but not sure if I should use TG or use T2 and just make it look like TG.

That's why I don't make any restrictio about it! ^^ Because Updated TG game are excactely like T2... What importance?
The difference now are the basic game ressources and nothing more ;)
So, I let you free to choose ^^
Players will play or not depending on the game they have! Their feeling too!
And because the multipolys model and HD textures are optional with updated TG game. I'm sure that some nostalgic player love to play with the orignal squaric models that are not present in T2!
Nostalgia dudes, think to nostalgia! ^^ (Plus the retro-gaming is a current thing these days so... Why should I force people to dromedise their mission with T2?)

Some interesting lists as well. I can totally imagine a gambling nest run by hammerites for Sliptip, or a detective working on a haunted case for Brethren. :D
