If you have a weekend contest, those who work at the weekend won't be able to participate, unless a second contest is held during the week.
What about a 7 day contest?

And how about a list with some objects that each contestant must put in their missions?
There are restriction, right, and hard! But don't forget why are there contest: "FUN", because you love dromeding and enjoy to show your efficiency.
Good ideas all around, you'd probably have to 1) give contestants plenty of notice on when the 48 hour time period is, and then 2) announce some specific requirements for each mission just before the contest starts so no one could get a head start.

The 48 hour contest sounds like a fun idea. I'd be on aboard with that if it happens. The only trouble is that it doesn't really leave any time for testing.
You could make the 48 hour time period strictly building time, and then after submitting entries, there could be a beta testing period where no new brushes or objects could be added, only bug squashing.

I agree, I like the idea of a 48 hour contest, but I think the 7 days would be more reasonable, without subtracting from the spirit of the short deadline.

I think this would work too if people don't like the 7 day deadline.

If by "template" you mean an empty base mission, I might be able to donate one to the cause. I don't see how you could do even a small mission in 48 hours if it also involved much building. I might even participate if it's really only over a weekend.
As far as a template, I was thinking it could be setup with just a starting point, basic objectives, and some of the directory structure in place, with files such as "missflag.str" and "goals.str" in place.
"Get Item X"
"Get X loot (Normal, Hard, Expert)
"Don't kill non-hostiles" (Hard), "Don't Kill anyone" (Expert)
"Get to escape Room"
As far as extending it to a week... I don't think so. My original idea was a 24 hour contest, but I figured a weekend would be better and more forgiving. Sure there may be bugs, but you'll have to plan the scope and complexity of your mission to account for it being a 48 hour project.

I think the 48 hour thing would be awesome, but you'd probably end up with a bunch of entries like what we saw in the Total Crap contest.

So, let's split the difference: 3 days to create the map and then 3 days to fix the bugs.
As template, let's create SOME MISSION BASE that all contestants will use.
For example: A forest mission Base, a city mission base, a hammerite's temple base, etc.
With nothing but a texture pack already loaded in these maps, a starting point, and the simple air brush "Jorged".
With all goals, gamsyst & schema configured.
Just to help the contestant to create faster and we're sure that nobody cheat by creating his mission before the contest's starting. :p
Although the contest will be hard to organize, but if we like and want to try such contest => why not?
If we could add more difficulties with a list of object to put in the mission, that would be amazing! :D
I know exactly how we could play with such rules! ;)

I think you're missing the point of a 48 hour mission build time. People will have to fit the scope of their mission into 48 hours, bug testing and all. That's the intention. Then you're done. If people prefer a 7-day contest, then make a 7-day contest.
The base wouldn't be meant to specify content, simply to get some of the drudge-work out of the way to streamline the build process. I would honestly say for a 48 hour contest, not to have any stipulation besides using the provided base and completion in 48 hours. It can be modified in any way, objectives changed or any extra textures or other content added.

You could also think about a "NewDark Features Museum" map : plenty of rooms, each author fill a room which shows a new feature of NewDark patch, lights, rendering, animated textures, 26 faces cylinder, coronas, fog, ...
Of course, at the beginning of the map there would be a raven holding a NewDark sign in his beak :)

You know, I really like the idea of the 48 hours contest. I would be in depending on the date it takes place, IRL gets really busy these days...
48 hours including testing seems quite difficult though.
FireMage on 3/7/2013 at 21:01
So, how about 48h to build + 5 extra days for testing?
Then we got 7 days to work and test and everybody is happy! ^^
If you think that you're late, you can use the extra days to complete your works, although, you'll lost some days to test your mission.
About the contents restrictions, or the Newdark museum, do all that you want. I have wondered about it, I think that could be used for other contest, not this one.
In 48h, the time to think how to respect the restrictions, you'll loose a day and will fail...:nono:
No, you're free, but you must publish it after 7 days or before.
About the beginning of the contest, we must select the HARD day, I mean the GOOD time when everybody would be free.
Because if you wanted to join the contest when it's already started......Ick!
And above all, don't worry the goal of the contest: The FUN! If we do that, this is for smiling seeing how a map quickly made look like! :D
No pressure, no problem, no time wasted on your projects and a break for the tired dromeders. ;)
