Yes that's right. I had Bioshock 2 on my steam thingy for quite a while, got it on sale I dunno when. Finally fired it up the other week.
Things were going ok for a while during the first session and it was..y'know..ok. Seems like it was expecting me to have played Bioshock quite recently in order to get what was goin on. But that's life (also ten years lying on a floor? whut?)
Anyway, try to play it for second session and GfW won't log in anymore and crashes the game. This appears to be it failing at updating itself. This is the third game that this has happened to me on and I am very tired of it. Manually reinstalling the damn thing is annoying and just plain offensive (GfW that is) and to top it all off there are no reliable GfW breakers/removers for BS2! (don't know why, tried a couple, they don't work).
I'm frankly disappointed in the hacking world for not destroying this horrid piece of software by now. Rooting it out of your legit steam install should be a challenge they are on top of at every step.
So, after struggling for a while and failing to make it go one way or another, I need some convincing that it's worth bothering with. (people like the Idle Thumbs gang never stop mentioning Minerva's Den as the greatest thing ever. That's DLC isn't it? I would have that, I don't think)

I've played BS2 multiple times and never had that issue. Try reinstalling?
(And Minerva's Den is fantastic.)

I played it on the 360 so I have no idea about the GFW stuff. I liked the story better in the first game but BS2 is certainly better from a gameplay standpoint.

I really don't want to download the whole thing again. It is almost certainly GfW failing to update itself. The exact same thing happened with GTA4 and Red Faction Guerrilla (odd that it only seems to update when I try a new game). The solution is generally to uninstall it and reinstall it (GfW that is) via this laborious process. It'd be great if I could just kill it dead.
Did Minerva's Den come packaged with the game at any point? I'll have to check.

No. That's a hassle in and of itself, where you have to download GFWL Marketplace and install it through there.
It's a lot less broken now than it was two years ago, but it's still a pain in the ass. Worth it though!

I could never make it update itself. Or update the game. Or do anything that resembles useful. It did almost lose my profile once though with all my savegames at one reinstall attempt. I suggest using it in offline mode and never updating, that's what I did.
BS2 might be worth it though, it's a good game IMO. AFAIK Minerva's Den was never part of any bundle, since it's GfWL only, meaning you have to buy it on GfWL. Meaning you have to go online with a profile, aaaand back to square one. I never played that myself.

Yeah, you just have to use offline mode.

Bioshock 2 is a moderately enjoyable shooter, I'd say it's worth it!
Just download a crack somewhere and play with a new local account, go easy on your conscience and your nerves without having to put up with GfWL.

I installed BS2 in steam last week or so, and I was having lots of problems with GFWL. It was very crashy though it finally updated the game successfully. After that, it would still crash every time when trying to play (bringing me to desktop, and the brightness of Windows increased until I rebooted... so annoying!) but when I alt-tabbed back into BS2 it was seemingly happy again and would let me play. What a piece of shit eh?
I enjoyed BS2 more than BS1 and would say it's worth it. Something about being a hulking bid daddy monster and smashing little twerps with a drill made the combat satisfying enough for me. Oh, also, fixing the FOV makes it playable.

That brightness problem can be alleviated without a reboot. Just right click desktop, click properties, and just move one of the brightness/gamma/etc. sliders even a touch and it will revert back.
