Greetings, TEG!
I am not well-versed in how copyright works percisely, especially when I want to borrow somebody's free resources (Vigil, Targa etc.). I get that I have to credit them, but what if I want a slightly tweaked version of their resources? I'd still credit them, but my exact version wouldn't anymore be their exact product so it's not a direct credit anymore. So if I want something a bit different, I have to make my own resources entirely? Or maybe I should just contact each author whose resource I wish to tweak and ask their permission?
Thanks in advance!

Personnally I've always tweaked existing textures made by Vigil or the CoSaS team for example, I always adapt ressources to my vision, and I just credit them. It's not the original textures anymore, but you still recognize them and I make sure it's no secret it's their work I used as a base. When someone wants to borrow textures from my FMs, I tell him what is my work from what is someone else's work, and make sure credit is due to the right person.

I always credit wherever the original texture came from, even if I altered it. It gets harder, of course, when borrowing from FM's. I tend to credit the FM creator. The way I do it now, if I download anything for my FM then I record it on a notepad document and use that with the mission text. I also tend to over-credit which insures that I will get most credits correct.:cheeky:

Hehe, I'm doing that too, cause I'm starting to realise that I may otherwise put in a lot more than I actually use in the mission. Btw, isn't Notepad++ just the greatest piece of software on computer? :cheeky: I only recently converted to it (no idea why it took me so long) and it has everything that notepad did, but also a lot more and everything smoothened to perfection.

when you cant find a real license
either credit them (even if you alter the texture to a point where the original is basicly gone) and link back to the source
or dont use it at all
thats what i do for my thief minecraft texturepack and it avoids most conflicts about copyright/licensing

Well, if you can't find any kind of license information, the
best thing to do first is ask the author if possible. If you can't ask for some reason, it is trickier - I'd personally err on the side of not using it, but *shrug*

I right click anything text now and open in notepad++. I love that program. It took me quite some time to finally try it since I'd never heard of it before. I had no idea that notepad could be so much better.

When I download something I place the zip file into a folder with the name of the author i.e. thief2\zip\schwaa so I always know where it came from.
