I've played on expert. I read in the walkthrought about Rubber's chores, but I haven't the opportunity to accept them? Is it something only for harder levels?
I'm not sure. However, the opportunity to accept his chores will be presented in an unusual way (at least compared to most other Thief missions). It happens during a conversation via the masks, if I recall that correctly.
To be more specific:
During the course of the mission, Rubber suddenly "disappears". Once he's found again, a conversation of the team begins, and during that you (Dante) can somehow volunteer to do Rubber's chores. I believe you tell your team that you will do this, and then Rubber tells you where to get those chores.

Yes, of course I paid attention to the conversations. The problem is that the only opportunity for me it was to accept to return the key to that guy's room. When Rubber talked again (after a period of silence from his part), the female agent told him that Garret already agreed to take the key.

I have now checked my old notes to "Mission X". I had some trouble with accepting Rubber's chores as well.
The first time I tried it, I had to carry back the key to Raputo, but I could decide freely whether I wanted to do Rubber's chores or not. This was done during a conversation. However, the guards killed me afterwards, so I had to reload a saved game.
This time, I
immediately selected answer 2/2 ("I'll do it!") and pressed the right mouse button, but then nobody (not even Dante, the character we play in this mission) said anything else, and "Finish nightly rounds" did not appear among the mission objectives either. I could not even ask Rubber what I should do (his answer would have been to get his list of chores out of a certain room in the building). The only thing I could still ask Rubber was how to get to the third floor unseen, to which he answered that I should climb up at a certain spot to get access to Cloud's suite. Apparently, the game somehow mixed things up.
Somewhere here on the forums there's a posting stating that there's a time limit for accepting Rubber's chores, which should be about 20 to 30 seconds. In my case, it took me no longer than about five seconds to make my choice and answer, but the game seems to have selected "don't do Rubber's chores" for me. Perhaps that's what happened to you as well.

Thank you for your detailed explanation! It makes me feel I'm not the only one who had this problem.

That's a shame. Ah, well. MX is a curious buggy beast.
I wonder if I could someday make an entire game around this type of idea, though.

I'm trying to get to the security room near the bar.
I found a vent above the Ivory Hall off the Monarch Suite. When I try to use it, it is too dark to see anything. If I move through it, I come to an inactive vent each time. I have the same problem with the vent behind the bar. I can't move at all.
Figured it out.
