So.....
I am going to be attending Dragon-con in Atlanta this year and I have made the decision that I would like to attend as Garrett. Not a lame cloak + blackjack outfit, but a bona-fide, accurate looking garret complete with fire, water, and earth arrows.

First part, is deciding on a garret. Without much of a doubt, the Thief 1/2 garret costume would be the best bet. Some aspects of this costume are fairly easy to find. Black archery gloves are common to find, as would be a bowman's bracer. The bow could be obtained by taking a normal simple bow, and painting it black(de-strung to make it lega), a toy sword looking similiar to garrett's should be easy to find while the blackjack can be crafted from styrofoam, again to make it convention-legal. Arrows should be simple to make: use dowels, payed with a darker wood finish, and use craft plaster to make the crystals.
The cloak is a bit of a problem. I have been unable to locate an adult-size, burlap cloak. some Jedi robes are close, but in each instance I have seen the sleeves are too baggy to resemble garrett's outfit, or to be tucked under his wrist brace as is seen in every official drawing of garrett.
Chest, I am thinking something along the lines of (

All in all, shouldn't be too difficult as costumes go. However, I am still not clear on lots of the details, and finding good items to go with some of these is difficult.

It would be cool if you could go as a pre-TDS Garrett as a way of promoting a return to the classic form.
His cloak doesn't have sleeves, so can you cut them off? The cloak is not made of coarse material such as burlap, but could be woolen (it is colder in The City, especially at night). The hood is most important to capture the look, otherwise it's like a cape in back. He's wearing a thick leather jacket with even thicker leather across the chest (riveted) and shoulders.

Thats the plan.

I like the idea of cutting the sleeves off, as a cheap wool cloak should be easy to find. A journey to party city will probably suffice.
Any ideas where to find a jacket like that at a reasonable price? I have not been looking hard, but I've yet to find one that looks right and is under 200 bucks.

What Garrett is wearing to me looks like a doublet to me, over his black shirt. On the box it looks leather, but anything leather is going to be expensive. And shiny... and Garrett is NOT shiny. Anyway, I found this on a page that sells period clothes (and Jedi clothes) for men. Scroll down to the item labeled "Black Wool Melton Renaissance Doublet". It's made of of thick material, a wool blend, and it's only 85 bucks. Comes with silver buttons but you paint them or swap them out.

Get some cool tailor near you and take to him raw materials, it will cost alot less. 125 dollars for that gambleson.. pah.. I don't wanna even think to what it will cost the whole setting. More: that costumes were pre-confectioned, so they will not be flawless in appereance. Instead with a tailor you can tell him precisely what you want.

If you have a look at the different images of Garrett in TDP you'll see that he always wears different things. Over his shirt there is indeed something like this Renaissance doublet, however, the first issue is that kind of black section with buckles or something incognizable. Second, sometimes he wears a collar without that someone could see where it ends. Third, there's this kind of scarf hanging over his belly and under his belt which could broaden at his shoulders and hang over his back like a little cape... that's what the briefing scene at Constantine's mansion suggests (and what I have done myself just in case these pictures still float around here). Over all of that there would be a hood, and even more over it there could ocassionally be a big cloak.

First of all, congrats on your epic decision! I hope you have fun.
My views:
1) The bow and arrows shouldn't be black. For the bow, a brown (probably dark brown) would be awesome. Also, the arrows should have brown shafts (thinking of stealth, they're gonna be in he quiver most of the time, so colour wouldn't be a huge issue to Garrett).
2) Black should be avoided. Now before everyone gasps, let me explain. In the night, "pitch black" is actually not hard at all to point out. In dim light, it is even easier. A dark grey or dark blue would probably be your best bet, plus you won't stand anxiously by a washer worrying about fading.
3) When in doubt, pick something that looks less artificial. The city certainly wouldn't have any of the latest marvels of today, they're barely into steam-powered computers. Therefore I'd concentrate on having an ensemble that looks made from natural materials.
4) I'm a perfectionist, so I'd wear everything to make sure the sound is minimal. This includes cloth rustling (less of a problem with natural fibres) and clinking of objects (including weapons) together. If you wanted to wear tap shoes, I'd say that's canon, though. ;)
5) It'd be cool to also carry some loot around. My suggestion: an oldish-looking coin that you can flip around in your hands. Perhaps a ring or two as well.
6) Finally, I'd be getting into character too. Nothing would ruin the entire set-up than a jolly belly laugh. Practice smirking and perhaps a few choice lines of dialogue. Something à la "The convention looks almost bearable from over here." :)
Oh yeah, and have fun! No pressure, you're just representing our entire community!

Garrett's outfits change as much as his face does. If you really want to costume as Garrett, just pick something that -you- like, and then give it a few features that will define it as Garrett. Things like his arrows, his blackjack, cloak, and his scar. Maybe even a key tattoo on the top of your hand. Bonus if you can find a green contact. But any thief fan who sees you with the above should recognize you right away.
Another cheap and easy suggestions would be to use glyphs. You could use a sharpie to apply them to any props or dark items of clothing, for a more subtle look.
You could make yourself some convincing arrows for pretty cheap also. Get a some thin wooden dowels at the craft store and paint them black or dark brown. Make yourself a tip out of card board and/or duct tape, or you could mold them out of sculpy. Tip the tips in a color of your choice and then wrap them in a few layers of colored cellophane. For moss arrows you could get some fake or real moss, or something equally green and fuzzy, and wrap the arrow tips in that.
Making some cheap props will give your outfit some detail and get the point across -who- you are without spending too much money on the outfit. Course, you could do both.
