While I have grunted skeptically, I have noticed them acting like they actually gave a shit recently.

Yeah, EA has been gradually moving in the right direction for the past year. The recent game, Skate, is reportedly genre redefining -they even refused to release any downloadable content for it.

Wow. Cant believe I`m hearing that from EA. I hope they stop gobbling up developers now.
Just imagine what Bullfrog, Origin and Westwood could have released if they`d not been bought out.
The Wingcommander and Ultima serieses would have continued. Of that I am absolutely sure. We`d also have got the third game in Crusader series that had been in development.

No real need to, Petroglyph is pretty much Westwood. And they released two rather mediocre games - Star Wars: Empire at War and Universe at War: Earth Assault. EA's C&C3 is quite a bit better.

Since they own the IPs for those games

meh. had C&C3 not actually been C&C3 IP-wise it would be down the gutter. though i enjoy it for bringing back some of that oldschool C&C strategy it aint getting no cake from me. same goes for EaW though the actuall mechanics are a bit better just not that polished/balanced. you should check out some of the "realism" mods released that balance it out.
though i dont have EA with such passion that most of you do, i'd feel safer if the SS IP was someone else's copyright ;)
that being said i've got a new found support for EA for supporting mass effect in that sex scene flop though the potential loss of money was behind it.

The answer is no.
They just tried to buy out Take 2.
