I'm still trying to work out whether the purpose for the Eye's creation, as explained in TDS, is another continuity error, or if the developers have more backstory they've withheld to create mystery and speculation. I have another couple of theories I'm working on, especially if it is a continuity error.

Also even if Constantine got the Eye just by waltzing into the Cathedral, he needs THE eye as well (a living eye -- possibly only Garrett's eye because Garrett being the brother and betrayer etc. etc.)
Garrett's not Bretheren & Betrayer. That's what the corrupt Keepers think. It's a possibility your are led to believe. Then Gamall is revealed for what she is.
Also Viktoria stated that she gets her powers from the forest, in the City she is 'not so assured of victory'. Same could be assumed of Constantine.

I think part of it is that it's just easier to trick Garrett to get the eye than to bother getting it himself.

Having rejected Constantine's request to steal the sword, you break into the museum instead. Once all your objectives are completed, you exit the building and find that the world has been taken over by the Trickster.

In that scenario, Garret would have plenty of raw gold to steal!

I think we also have to understand that the Talismans are four very powerful artifacts. The Trickster may be a nature god of legend, but without the power or the ability to break such wards. (The way you can force jump into the gap in the cathedral and take the Eye is obviously an in-game error the play testers didn't pick up on / or the devs thought it unecessary to amend!)
I think the Trickster is completely unable to break the wards (placed there to specifically keep out major powers), and even he may have had a problem with taking the Eye - if it didn't want to be taken.

And what Gambit says about Hammerite magic protecting their Talisman(s) is another thing that makes sense. For surely no pagan would not be able to 'cast' the "I am a Wallbuilder" prayer? They would need a thief.
But a heretical thief can say the prayer and still open the gates? Doubtful, then, that another type of heretic wouldn't be able to.

the Trickster, being a god, knowing all, seeing all and completely in charge, was bored in his own realm, as there were no surprises, no entertainment
then one day, a day that was just like all the other boring days that preceded it, there was a surprise, a mortal mage called Constantine opened a conduit to the tricksters realm and attempted to steal the gods powers for himself, highly amusing
the god took a dim view of this attempt but instead of simply erasing this upstart from existence his curiosity was aroused, as this was the most entertainment he had had in a very long time, he possessed Constantine
through Constantine, the Trickster learned of this whole new realm where things were not under his control, surprises happened, there was entertainment, the god was at last amused, the god learned of the pagans and was happy at their worship, the god learned of the hammers and the other mages and perceived their potential, their ambition and their arrogance.
they could never be a threat, but their impudence and lack of respect deserved a lesson, not so amusing, something must be done, SOB's must pay
however Constantine while powerful was not omnipotent, the god found he could not simply make things the way he wished, also Constantine was mortal should he die then the Trickster would have to wait for another ambitious and foolhardy mage to make the attempt to steal his power, while all the time this lack of respect would go unpunished, the boredom would be back and gods aren't big on patience (imagine a being with the temperament of a two year old child and the power to make what they want happen just by thinking about it suddenly having to wait in line)
so the god devised a plan to merge the realm of the trickster with the realm of men so he could perform his punishment in person, a plan which protected his conduit Constantine from possible harm until it was complete, a plan which would not arouse the suspicion of the hammers and the mages, for their retribution could destroy Constantine and the Trickster would have to wait once more for another fool, above all a plan which was entertaining
this plan required stealth
this plan required a thief .....
(imagine more wavy lines here as we come back to the present :cheeky: )
so the whole quest with the eye was an attempt to merge the Tricksters realm and Garretts so that the Trickster would not be bound by the restrictions of Garretts realm, would not have to work through Constantine and would have his full powers in both
which meant that Constantine had to be dealt with before this could take place, as once the realms merge you'd have to deal with a god, onmiscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and sufficiently ticked off to wipe humankind from existence the instant he gets here
now as Constantine is mortal he could probably have been dealt with with a few weapon strikes, but as he is extremely powerful we'd be talking about a couple of sunburst type bombs going off with him sitting on them, after the first one I suspect he would come looking for you and make sure you didn't have a chance to plant any more, so you on your own don't stand much chance, an army of undead or a bunch of mages or lots those taffin fire elementals might be able to finish him off, the Trickster can't take the chance, so you get hired to go deal with all the bad guys as a) you are expendable and b) you aren't perceived to be a sufficient threat to Constantine
so I doubt Constantine could have sucessfully retrieved the wards and the eye without help from some quarter and Garrett was the only one skilful enough to do this without attracting undue attention from the hammers, so I reckon the museum job would have been a safe option :cheeky:
or something like that ;)
