What are they playing at? I can only assume from this that HL3 is going to be absolutely epic, and a step away from HL2 in the same way as 2 was from 1.

Do you guys remember many months ago an interview with Gabe who chuckled to himself about having 3 (iirc) big "surprises" that the community will be blown by? I guess this is one of them. Although I don't know how much of a shocking surprise it is. I mean, realistically, it was only matter of time. And as much as I'd like to imagine new cool shit (procedurally generated fully destructible maps? CSMMO? Hostages that dont get stuck on every goddamn cabinet?), it's CS and, to continue it's supremaicy, it has to stay more or less exactly the same (we all remember the bitching when Source came out and was just slightly off).
But hopefully, this will coincide with Source 3 and the last installment of HL3. Both the engine and franchise are in a dire need of a big overhaul.

Not to mention we've been hearing bits about "Counter-Strike 2" for ages; to anyone with a memory longer than 6 months this is hardly a shocker.

I'm guessing that it will have hats, possibly even be F2P.

Eh... there was a demand for a new Counter-Strike?

I just thought they were gonna continue to update CSS for a while, seeing as how there's an official Beta version of it where they roll out their new changes before eventually putting it into the regular version.
But a new engine and updated visuals would be great.

Curious to see whether the silly MMO bullshit from TF2 comes over to this.
Fuck, I was mildly excited about this until you said this, and you're probably right. Can't wait to grind and diddle with a senseless crafting mechanic so I can get better stuff for no good reason.
OTOH, the five other guys I play CSS with now and then are extremely unlikely to move outside their li'l comfort zone.
