If anything, I would think it would pull resources away from it.
Erm, it's not being made in-house by Valve. Hidden Path, who currently maintains CS:S (and developer of Defence Grid), is working on it.
I bet that Episode 3 or HL3 will be the showcase for the rumoured next major Source update which has DX11 bells and whistles.
I'll be honest, I pretty much hate vanilla CS, but have a soft-spot for Gungame which is fairly fun.

Just because it is being developed out of house doesn't mean time and money from Valve in some form and on some level weren't lost.

... which they wouldn't be spending on episode 3 anyway as far as i can tell

Just sayin', it affects them. Might be rather insignificant, but it affects them.

I dunno, Valve seem to have enough money to buy the moon multiple times over.
We probably won't hear a peep about a new Half-Life game until Dota 2 and CS:GO are out the door (no doubt that they're working on an unannounced HL project though, if not several). As a game developer, competitive MP games seem to be their focus at the moment (aside from "let's see how much more we can mutate TF2 to milk more money out of suckers").

CS:GO is very good, definitely worth the $15 USD asking price from Steam. The (

I dunno how the Yankee/Euro communities are doing, but it's causing a good resurgence of old blood in the Australasian PC gaming communities. CS is relevant again.

I'll probably pick up a copy at the turn of the month or something.

... Which I did.
It's... pretty much Counterstrike with a few pointless new modes based on Gungame and whatnot. Some of the classic maps like Office return, and there's new maps like Safehouse that aren't playable in classic mode afaik for god knows what reason. And no cs_militia in sight -- DISAPPOINTING.
But I like it anyway. It's the same old CS we know and love, and it's good to lose an hour or two into.
