and even if I suppose it's cool nowadays to like Johnny Cash and hate everything that Sting does, I got to say that Sting's original version is just so much better. Not that Cash's cover is bad either, and I love his music normally, but I feel that his version is missing that little something that makes a cover a good one.
Weird. I really think the Cash song is very good. Maybe the best of all his American Recordings songs. I like the calm voice and calm arrangement (not sure this is the best english word for it). It fits the subject of the lyrics perfectly. The Sting version, and Sting's voice are just a little too upbeat for my taste.
I must admit I am not a Sting fan. I was in my mid-teens when The Police had their first hitsongs. I was an aspiring hipster, and didn't like bands that reached nr1 in the charts. Later I changed my opinion. I still didn't like Sting. But I must admit that songs like Walking on the Moon and The Bed's too Big Without You are pretty good songs. I even bought a CD by the Police at some point.
The reason I posted here (I hardly post here anymore, because of the hostile environment, and the mods don't care), is that on another forum we had exactly the same subject last week. I came up with lots of songs where I liked both the original and the cover. But covers that improve the original are quite rare. But I think "I hung my head" by Cash is definitely an improvement.
Example where both (

Fine, except that Paul wrote "With a little help...", not Ringo.
Awww. I didn't know that Paul and John did that. That was so sweet of them. I thought their rule was 'you wrote it, you sing it'.
I still say that Cocker cocked it but I learned something new too.

Fortunately, I can still keep my signature though.

in his 1980 Playboy interview Lennon said: "This is Paul, with a little help from me. 'What do you see when you turn out the light/ I can't tell you, but I know it's mine...' is mine."

Don't diss Beyonce for that, since it's a hit for a reason. Good cover though.
I saw Janelle Monaé two days ago. She performed Jackson 5's I Want You Back and it was absolutely brilliant with her sounding so weirdly child-like as well. She is spot on all the other covers she sings as well.

(

Contains a bunch of good ones that haven't been mentioned yet. Jenny Owen Youngs covering Nelly. Lemmy Kilmister doing The Beatles. And a fantastic
fantastic cover of Outkast's "Hey ya" by The Bogmen. Somehow there's also two Coldplay covers. I don't know how that happened.

I was going to say (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dunKAwRN3P8&ob=av2n) Perfect Circles cover of Imagine, but after listening to the original again, I'm not sure. I still like it, and the tone is very different, but the original is pretty hard to beat.
I also like (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-qPWh_jDLA) NINs cover of Metal by Gary Numan. Its a lot like the original, but with a little tone change and its lengthened (and I like the instrumental ending couple minutes).
And for one more, I like (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWChhdIgT6Q&ob=av2e) Panteras cover of Planet Caravan - its a little less trippy then the sabbath version (which is still perfectly good), but I like Pantera and I like the guitar work better.
