Has anyone here played Painkiller? If so, I'm sure you noticed the uncanny similarities between the patients in the Asylum level with the patients in the Cradle. They look and even sound very similar. Just an observation.
I have only played Painkiller's all 3 demos. Battle out of Hell is available in stores in my area but i am kindda looking forward to the full version of the first instalment. Yes i agree it would have been hard on both Daniel Garner and Garrett fighting and sneaking past undedads in "town" and "Shalesbridge Cradle".

Quadro-post?!

I finished it today...
O_o
Mommy... :(
YES the first thing I thought was that the name was SICK and
an asylum and an orphanage together
is VERY sick and just plain WRONG! :nono: And what is also twisted is that
there is nothing in the first part
.
The pages left around, the notes,
the toys
, and everything just gave such a clear picture of what went on in this hell hole before the fire. This level makes me feel so depressed and sorry for these "residents", especially the orphans. :erm:
The sounds and music were just... O_O. It made it seem as if something was there. I thought something would attack me from behind. Anything I did (
turning on the generator, coming back from the past
) - I thought more zombies would respawn and know where I was. The building was scary in general. Also, did anyone notice that in the entrance to the meal hall the cups are stacked up (on the left table) to make it look like a hooded figure is standing in the corridor to the left?! I almost had a heart attack when I saw that. :erm:
Did anyone get lost there?! I did... a lot >_>. I didn't sneak past ANYTHING. I ran from the "staff" (in the past) and they were REALLY scary.
I remember first seeing a "patient" in the Nursery Tower. I thought the light bulb flickering was the sound that the zombie made. Either way I killed the first zombie and turned off the game. I went down the stairs and when my dad started walking across the hallway in front of me I screamed out cause I was thinking about the zombie (I thought my dad was a zombie for a second  ) and was trying to remember how to kill them. :erm:
For the ending I just jumped off the table, out the window. I was rushing through the whole ending part of it just to finish it already.
Very good level, maybe the scariest I've played, I can't really remember.

On the whole I thought this was one of the better levels I have ever played in any FPS type of game, just for the ambience, let alone anything else.
Amusingly, while the ambience of the outer cradle was unnerving,
I did come to the conclusion that it was just ambience after about 15 minutes myself.
I agree with the post from a year ago that extra details such as moving shadows would have added a whole new dimension to the outer cradle. The door in the attic DID get to me big time. It took me ten minutes to work up the nerve to open it.
On the other hand, the inner cradle had my hands sweating. When I first walked in and saw my first puppet I was like WTF is that?!! I am slightly confused though. Do they get back up? I never had one do that to me.
I assumed they were undead based on the ambience of the environment and flashbombed them or used fire arrows, and they didn't get back up on me.
I am also confused by the references to patients. And the shadow behind the desk. I never saw anything but puppets in the present. Are the puppets being referenced as the patients in the present? Were there patients in the past? All I ever saw was staff.
I did have a rather unnerving experience in the therapy corridor.
There is the one puppet bent down "eating"? something?, and I knew there was another around the corner of the closest doorway to the barred wall, but I was sure it was fairly far away because the lights weren't flickering at the time. So anyway, I fire arrowed the kneeling down one, and turned to find the one from the other hallway standing in the doorway right in my face!
I actually yelled "Holy shit!" out loud, and ran like hell. THAT scared the crap outta me.
Mostly though I was fairly ready for things. I observed the
flickering lights thing
quite quickly, and I tend to play a waiting game, lobbing cups, or whatever else to lure enemies to a postion I feel comfortable with. I have a feeling that it would have been much more exciting/tense if I had just run like hell through the place stirring up all manner of chaos.
The thing about the end of the mission is quite amusing.
I found a nice alternate to runing down the table through the staff. I STARTED the fire mentioned in historical reference. I lobbed all of my oil flasks at the table, and then sent a fire arrow after them.
After the flames died down, I just sauntered over to the window, and dropped out.
I also agree with whoever said that they should have altered the past environment to reflect a working asylum/orphanage as opposed to it still looking like an abandoned building. Again though, in spite of minor nitpicking points, I still found this one of the best levels I have ever had the shuddering pleasure of experiencing.
I found this thread doing a search for undead in the thief games. Can anybody point me at other threads relating to the various types of undead to have appeared in the game series?

About the references to the patients:
If you completed the mission you must have understood what happened at the Cradle and what role the patient's had. But the puppets ARE the patients. Well, the reanimated corpses of them anyway, brought to life by the Cradle.
As to moving shadows; I scared the crap out of myself in the Outer Cradle. I was creeping about and saw a shadow move!!!! It was my own shadow lol. Really, really got me though. Great moment.

Yes. But little girl ghosts are far more creepy than ambiguously gay adult ghosts.
YES! I'm not the only one who thought that! God, Brother Murus cracked me up. . :cheeky:
hmm. . randomly, that "hospital" level in Silent Hill 4 just might be able to give the Shalebridge Cradle a run for it's money. . . . . ;)
I'm not even all the way through it, though, and unless it starts getting scarier, it's not likely to beat the cradle. I remember first playing the Return to the Cathedral mission in Thief and having to stop playing at one point so I could lie down on my bed to quit hyperventilating. (though it didn't scare me as much as the cradle)
Silent Hill hasn't done that so far. . it's kinda strange how when you're actually playing the game everything seems so scary but when you're not playing and start thinking about it it parts of it actually seem funny. . . haunted wheelchairs? HEEE!
wow, that was random

I played T2 a dozen times, then T3 3 or 4 times before ever touching T1. I played Dark Project & got to Haunted Cathedral and it still scared me for awhile. Like Cradle, it only lasted until I figured out how to kill the baddies but even so...

"I also agree with whoever said that they should have altered the past environment to reflect a working asylum/orphanage as opposed to it still looking like an abandoned building."
I noticed that too, but I figured that since the Cradle is "remembering" the past, perhaps it's been so long the Cradle has forgotten what the place looked like when it was functional.
Thing is, even though I know (especially since I have all the DS music on MP3) that the Outer Cradle is nothing but soundtrack, that doesn't stop my flesh from crawling. I stick to the shadows and move through lighter areas with all haste.

Well the cradle certainly was eerie, though another part of thief which raised the chills a bit more was my first snoop earlier in the game within the keeper compound around the balcony outside Caduca's room, while sticking to the shadows that little girl translator walked past me, as she walked past me her shadow suddenly extended to the size of a grown person, then shrank again when she walked past. Not sure if it was built in or a glitch, but it certainly preyed on my mind.
Anybody has anyother blood curdling video game moments?
Recall the blair witch project 1 game which had it's moments, particularly the preacher dragging that boy around blair towards the conclusion.

It seems to happen regularly. I wish, I would see it. ;_;
Well, it makes sense. After all, the girl IS, uhm, a bit strange. XD
